Steering Shaft - 1968 F100 4WD

Post by Idaho68 »

Hi all
Hoping to get a bit of help here.
Truck is a 68 F100 4X4
I have had wandering issues since I picked the truck up last November with the steering.
I replaced all front tie rods and drag links.

The steering wandering problem has been corrected about 50%.
I adjusted the Power Steering screw about 1/2 turn.. helped a bit but not fully corrected.

Upon inspecting the steering shaft to discconnect ( I was going to send the box to Red Head Steering, as I thought this was the only issue left) I noticed the lower steering shaft where it attaches to the input shaft of the Steering Box very loose. When the steering wheel / upper shaft turns there is a 3mm play in the connection. I dove deeper into this area and was able to pull a washer that was only sitting in the alumimum housing. I did not see a snap ring or any other piece. I can not figure out how to disconnect the lower from the steering box. This is my question: How do you disconnect this portion? I undid the upper bolt and it would not collapse downward so I am thinking that it has to, in some way disconnect from the steering box end. I am learning as I go so help here would be appreciated.
I am also not seeing this as a part listed on this specific truck with Power Steering (which I have).. So I am at a loss here if this shaft is from a manual steering truck or what.. any help here is really appreciated.
Picks of the unit are below:

Well your pictures didn't post.
This model truck didn't come with factory power steering (as far as I know).
so it's hard to say what you have without pictures.

First off I've never seen a setup like that. Is that what they look like in 4 wheel drive as I've never worked on a 4 wheel drive column. also looks like someone welded the shaft. If you have play at the bottom of the column there is probably some issue's with the bearing and or the bearing centering part which I believe is plastic.

Well I fixed the problem,, invested into a Borgeson shaft - super nice and much more stable than the "stock". Just put new General Grabber At2 on today with a toe adjustment and the steering thus far is pretty darn good / better than before. I will get it up to speed and see if I still get the bump steer from certain parts of the hwy that caused big issues before. Work in Progress still as a bigger drop Pitman arm may be the next search.
