New guy- steering column rebuild 1965

Post by F1Hunter »

Hi!
I recently purchased a 65 f100, there's a lot of slop and grinding in the steering column. On the engine side of the column there's a metal cup hanging down loosely. It may be a retainer or very neglected bearing race. I am looking at this diagram and would like to orer parts before pulling the column to minimize my un-driveable time

Does anyone know which of those parts are the wear items I would like to replace around the bearing area? I am looking at parts 3510, 3517, 3518 and 380084-S, not sure what's bearings and what's spacers or washers. I have a 4 on the floor, so this diagram may not be perfect for me. My FSM is in the mail, just want to get ahead of this one. Thanks!

I've replaced the bearing sleeves, bearings and the lower seal. I haven't put the column back in permanently yet since I still need to paint the interior. But those parts made a world of difference while moving the truck around the shop.

A little thing I wrote up when I rebuilt mine. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=72274 3510 is just a retainer washer, yours should be fine. 380084-S is a felt washer, just kinda a cushion/seal. 3518 is the retainer sleeve, acts as a centering device for the shaft in the bearing. 3517, I believe, is the bearing itself and the only real wearable part of the bearing assembly http://www.carolina-classics.com/Detail ... ategory=22

Thanks guys, very helpful!
Sargentrs-similar to what you stated in your write up I do have significant gouging on the column from the failed bearing. I could find a replacement colunn at a yard, or I could just live with the slop even after the bearing and everything is replaced.....?
For bearings and nitty gritty stuff of this nature, what online vendors do you like and who has good parts diagrams and #s?
Also the horn doesn't work and the wheel is off at 90 degrees, i should fix that while I am in there.

Any local machine shop can reburb that steering shaft for you. Those are not remanned by anyone so that's about your only hope unless a member here has an extra one. It would only be a matter of time before the gouged/worn shaft would cause a serious issue with your steering. For steering column parts, I like Carolina Classics or Dennis Carpenter. You won't find better diagrams that what we have here in our tech section. Also, here's the master parts catalog for part numbers http://www.fordification.com/mpc/index.htm You never did say where you were located?

I think I finally got it, so hard to tell those parts apart with the little drawings. I think I could get away with just one bearing and sleeve, but since it's Friday I might as well dig it open tomorrow and take a look. Carolina classics has a great variety of parts!
Other jobs in the near future-parking break, rear shoes (fronts good), tune-up, carb clean, weather stripping...whew!

I went on a nice long vacation, I left the steering column out while I was away. I reinstalled and it's much nicer now! Luckily there wan't gouging on the steering shaft like I feared. The lower bearing had fallen out and was grinding down the clamp that holds them up in there. Someone had installed the bearing retainer on the wrong side of the bearing. Sargentrs- your pics on your tutorial where very helpful as my bearings weren't assembled in the right order.
