Converted to P/S and now it won't turn

Post by 70-71 Bumpside »

I am new to this site... I just converted my 70 F-100 to power steering. I took the box and pump off my 71 F-100 since it will be a couple years til it is back on the road.... I got it Ann connected and now I can't turn the wheel... The pump is pumping at a high volume, and the fluid is circulating... I have flushed the system, and swapped the pump to another one I know is good....still can't turn it... When I have the wheels off the ground it turns with one finger... But with weight on it it won't turn at all... Any ideas?

Did you also take the column firewall bracket from the P/S on the '71? Not doing so will place the steering column at an incorrect angle, adding additional stress on the rag joint/steering box. There is also a difference in the pitman arm's I believe. Might want to check the drag link/tie rod/pitman arm configurations per these write ups http://www.fordification.com/tech/str-s ... ations.htm and http://www.fordification.com/tech/powersteering.htm

Is your truck rusty look at the cab mounts. The mounts rust causing the cab to fall onto the frame putting a lot of stress on the steering column.

I'm wondering if the tie rods may be binding or catching on something, since you said that it will turn with the weight off the front wheels?

I tried changing the pitman arm but it was different. I jacked it up and couldn't see anything binding up. I think my gear is bad...

Just an update... I replaced my power steering pump with a new one, replaced the lines and put in new King Pins.... It got a little easier after the King Pins were done, but it still won't turn with the weight of the truck on the ground.... I ordered a new power steering gear last night.... I gotta be missing something...

I got my new gear, tried one more time to bleed the old one... I put on the new gear, was hooking everything up and decided to check pressure new Auto Zone pump was putting out .... ZERO... Pump bad, went to my spare parts pile and dug out an old pump, filled it with fluid and it worked great... I now have smooth power steering... Took the new pump back and got a refund... Got my gear from Rock Auto... $ 156 shipped to my door...
