What Size Brake Shoes?

Post by colnago »

All,

I started working on my '67 F250 the other day (rear axle refresh), and was surprised to find that it is using a 2-3/8" locknut. This is the full floating-axle design, rated at 5,200 lbs. So, before I tear the whole thing apart, does anyone know what size brake shoes I have? I originally thought 12"x2", but after reading RobRoy's rebuild experience, I'm wondering if I have 12"x2-1/2". But his axle was rated at 8,400 lbs (I think), and used a 2-9/16" locknut.

Any info on axle seal size and bearing size? Sorry, forgot to measure the axle diameter when I pulled it; I was so flustered with the locknut size being different, that I put it all back together, since it's my daily driver.

Thanks,

Joseph

On edit, it's a '67 F250 Camper Special, 5,200 lb GVW.

All,

From reading Google links, it looks like all Camper Specials used 12"x2-1/2" brakes. Still stumped on why my locknut is only 2-3/8". :hmm:

My 69 F250 2x4 uses a 2 3/8 nut on Dana 60 rear as well. Also, IIRC, 12 x 2 1/2 shoes.

Just ordered new bearings/races from Rock Auto. I wasn't planning to do the bearings, but I finally decided that I never, ever want to get into the rear hubs again. Everything inside the hubs will be replaced. Thanks for the part numbers!

I went through the same thing you did. You have the 12 1/8" brakes. Also listed in decimals as 12.125". However, I have seen them incorrectly listed as 12.12. Which is why you think you have 12 1/2" brakes.
