Identification: Bendix vs Saginaw

Post by AngryToast203 »

Hey all, I recently purchased a 1965 F250 2WD 352V8 4spd manual and am planning on (slowly) restoring it to its former glory, and am currently trying to get it to where it can be driven reliably.
The guy I bought it from was planning on doing a power steering conversion but never got it installed, and threw in the parts with the truck. I am now getting ready to make the swap, but am having trouble identifying the gearbox - well, gearboxes to be precise, as I discovered when I got the truck home that it had two boxes and PS pumps. I've read Fordification's tech article on doing the swap, but it did not go into great detail about the differences (other than length) between the Bendix and Ford/Saginaw box, and doing other searching on the internet showed that there's not much out there to differentiate.
The two gearboxes I have seem to be identical, with the obvious exceptions being that one seems to have been refurbished and the other still has the Pitman arm attached. There's a date code (at least it looks like one) legible on the unrefurbished box that reads C7AR which would mean that it was manufactured in 1967 and would therefore have to be a Bendix box as the Saginaw was not used until '69, from what I understand. However, there is no telltale 'B' on the casing that I could find on either gearbox, and I did not see any date code at all on the refurbished box.
I've attached some photos to help. Hopefully, you guys can glance at these, call me an idiot for my lack of knowledge, and steer me in the right direction (pun somewhat intended). Thanks.

The Saginaw boxes are larger requiring the different engine perch. Is it possible you have two Bendix boxes?

Maybe post up some better pics and ask over at slick60's. Those guys are the experts on a pre '67 trucks.

Could there be different Saginaw gear boxes for truck vs car vs 2wd vs 4wd? There's an obvious difference between the Bendix and the Saginaw.

Here's also a photo of the Saginaw I took off of my '71 parts truck for my P/S conversion. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &start=225 down near the bottom of the page. Looks like the one on the left in your photo.
