4x4 steering column and 2x4 steering column differences

Post by rabbithunter2005 »

Ok I know that on a 2wd truck u have to match ur steering column to what steering box u use whether it be the manual, bendix, or saginaw. I know that cause I remember going thru it changing my 69 pickup from the leaking bendix to the saginaw setup. I have the bendix steering column still and I was wondering if I could use that column on my 67 high boy cause the bearings or bushings which ever are inside the 4x4 column are shot I can wiggle the steering shaft at the end of the column a lot. So i was wondering if the 2wd column would work in the truck if I use the 4x4 steering shaft in the 2wd column or is that just not possible. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank all of u for the library of info u all provide.

No, the 4WD column shafts have a U-joint collar on the end of the shaft, and the 2WD shafts have a have a rag joint flange that is swaged on. If it's just the column housing you need, you can swap the two shafts, as long as the 2WD column is from a 4-speed truck with power steering. However, new bearings are very cheap...IMHO you should just fix the column you have.
