Here’s the right rear axel - you can see where I buffed off some of the rust to see the structure.

Pulled the 4 bolts holding the rearend carrier, and it all but fell right out. One of the bearing cane right off, the other is still stuck in there. I went to look and see if these were pressed or not and found videos of some crazy stuff just to get the carrier out.

Is it out if the norm for them to come right out?

Either way, next step is that I’m taking the carrier to get a chemical bath on Monday. I’m HOPING that I can get the front end apart just as easy, but the hub assembly has a few more parts than 8 bolts.

Rear axel update for the day - I think all and all this was the most “complete” and success for the day. Got them out, stripped, protected and back in. Attached are before and after photos.

The rear end currently seems ok. I pulled the whole carrier and then I’m taking it for a good bath and bearings on Monday. Here are a couple photos to get a good look at the rust in plain site.

Biggest question here is if the carrier should have come out as easy as it did. Seems like it should, but I read some other stories that made it seem all but impossible. Either way, mine is out.

I figure this will see far more wear and tear than the front end, so it’s my priority to have it in good running condition. So I’m glad this has been the easiest to work on.

The front end is another story. Much more rust, and as I started I realized that it was a much bigger tast to get to the axels than the rear. With that I mind I decided to do as much cleanup as possible without pulling axels. Worst case I get the truck running with noisy or no front wheel drive. My gut is telling me I need to invest a bit more time, education and work into get it done to the level I was able to get the rear end . . . Let alone a complete restoration.

Either way, it cleaned up about as well as I could have hoped.

Rear axle. The carrier should not fall out. However mine was worn the same way and was so bad it destroyed itself. If carrier should fit in snug and not move side to side. Check for that may be able to shim it out.

Front axle is rusty but as you cleaned it up it looks fine to me. You need to run hubs in a while or t case in a while as much as you can. As you won't be going 70 in 4x4 i think your gonna be fine with what you got. The rear end carrier deal is something to concern yourself at a 25% level. Rust at a 10% level. I would take those issues anyday of the week...

It was def snug with no slop. But I was able to pull it out by hand with a good tug. . . . While others have to do this. https://youtu.be/a2D0VpZ753Y

Fresh going together i have a case spreader that streches the case .001-.005 then you can slip it in drop the tension. If it was snug no slop its just the wear in the carrier side bearings. As the front has hardly run its really tight like factory. I would clean her up and get it together running. You can come back to it later if it gives your trouble but i do not think it will. :thup:

You still have your parts truck rear axle for parts or swap the whole unit into the 4x4. Those axles are rusted more than anything I have seen. That housing will need major cleaning inside.

Looks like those axles were run dry on oil- better check everything in there. At least when there's new oil it won't rust anymore in there :thup:

Not dry, it just sat in storage for over 15 years :(

That’s what I’m thinking to, but want to put off taking that truck off the road as long as possible.

Yeah the shims are near cut thru thats why you were so loose. I would say you need to shim it back up after you get the housing clean and wahsed out. :thup:
