That's the plan. I still have some accessory wiring to do, chop and section the box, wire in the tail lights, mount the rear bumper, doors, and hood... but yeah, I'm really hoping to drive it next week, just if nothing else to leave a couple black strips in front of the house!Manny wrote:Sounds good fuel system and then your running???

Project Floyd: Today was another day of little things... wired in the power driver's seat and the 12v outlet on the back of the center console/jump seat. Mounted the new steering wheel and fixed the turn signal switch. Rather than swap out the injector rails, I decided to go with a Walbro fuel pump and an in line pressure regulator. So I finished off by installing the fuel regulator and plumbing it to the fuel rail. Waiting on a couple of fittings to finish the under hood plumbing. FedEx delivered the fuel tank late today, so that killed my dreams of driving the truck this week . I'll be able to get it mounted next and plumb it in. That should have the truck running!

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Project Floyd: Major day for the F100 this afternoon! I was able to get the fuel tank mounted, the gauge sender, fuel pump, and fuel lines all wrapped up... Earlier in the week I bent up a couple of cross members out of 12 gauge to use, so they just needed to be welded in. With that done, I was able to get the tank into place, cut and make the mounting straps, and it was good to go. I went with a Tanks Inc. 15-1/2 gallon tank, along with their Walbro Fuel pump. I used a Bosch sending unit that I've used on multiple projects in the past and had good luck with.

The fuel system fittings are all Earls or Phenix (made here in Idaho). While running it, the compression fitting for the 5/16 hard line started leaking, so I'll have to pick up another ferrule and fix that!
But, it runs and sounds great!
https://youtu.be/RbEkO45Ey6E
Just need to get it out and let it self tune... once the wires are all routed and the interior is put back together of course....almost there!
70 hours!

While my boys were fishing crawdads out of the ditch this evening (they caught 9, lost at least that many) I finalized the wiring and plumbing at the tank. Can't run the rest of the vent until the bed goes on.

Cleaned up the shop today... it was beyond time. Needed to get that 50lbs of floor dry out from under the F100... how about that stance!
All the wiring and work is done on the underside, so it can stay down... finish up interior wiring and get it back together, then on to the bed chop!

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Had an hour this evening, so I mounted the doors back on the truck, need to pull the door panels off so I can replace the lock cylinders, but figured getting them in place was one step closer!
I also built a small bracket out of a piece of 12g stainless I found in the shop to mount the MSD TCM controller on. Wanted it where it was easily visible (shows current gear selection, transmission temperature, and allows for selection of any custom shift calibrations/parameters I make).

Project Floyd... things happened today, The truck did a BURN OUT. That's right, some rubber was melted, smoke was made, and shouts of joy were heard...

oh, and the hood was installed, the back up lights wired up, and the park light wiring done...
72 hours, and ONE BURN OUT.

Project Floyd: Took the truck for a ride today... went an 1/8 mile, just so I could say I'd been for a drive. That only happened because the replacement fuel line fitting arrived and I was able to get it installed. I spent the rest of my time today installing the new door and ignition lock cylinders, installing the black door panels and mounting the mirrors.
Before
After
74 hours, one burn out, 1/4 mile on the odometer.

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Project Floyd: Spent the day working on all the little things that remained in the cab that I actually had parts for. I wired in the dome light and the door switches. Installed a wiper switch from a 1985 F250 (plugged right in and worked!). This provides intermittent wipers, rather than the stock two speed. Since the wiper switch was installed, I ran the wire from the new switch out to the washer fluid pump. Finished up the under dash wiring with the installation of an inertia switch for the fuel pump (cuts power to the pump in case of a collision).
From there, I patched up the smaller holes on the doors from where the moulding mounted. I'll weld up the larger holes while I'm welding the bed.
I spent some time trying to get it to self tune... still running rich. Figured out that was because there is a significant amount of fuel in the oil from the "unregulated" prior fuel issue, enough that it'll still run with no fuel to the rail (duh). So, I'll have to do an oil change next week and start on the self tuning again!
78 hours, one burn out, and only 1/4 mile driven.

Uh, ....what? Me thinks not. I believe you're missing some of the fundamental principles of internal combustion.biggurn wrote:

Do not run that motor another second with "significant" fuel in the oil. You're doing damage to the bearings.
Get the oil changed and get the truck on the road. The EFI will require some miles of variable driving to properly tune.

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Not the first time I've run into this scenario, I'm well aware of the need to change the oil I've been turning wrenches over 25 years, some of those as a Polaris tech then a John Deere tech. Years ago, Polaris actually had a service bulletin addressing this very issue in their ATVs when the crank case would become saturated with gasoline in the oil on their then new Magnum 4-Stroke ATVs. The thinned out oil would pass the rings (not to mention the fuel fumes vacuumed via the breathers back into the intake), mix with the intake air to be compressed add in the last ingredient, and boom: ignition, it would cause the ATV to run very rich. It was not uncommon to find a customer ATV running with no fuel in the tank. A quick way to diagnosis the condition is to shut the fuel off and if still running, pull the crankcase breather from the intake, unless the engine is way over filled with fuel, it'll sputter and die. I have seen the same thing happen a various other ATVs not to mention I've seen the same problem on a Jeep 4.2 that flooded severely while rock crawling and on numerous small engines (Briggs & Stratton, etc). As you note their is a significant risk to bearings, hence why I plan to change the oil & filter and once again move back to tuning the HP EFI. I pulled my dip stick as I just arrived home, only about two quarts over, so I'm pretty fortunate there! I'm working a 6 day stretch of 12 hour shifts, so I can't get back to the truck until next weekWhitsEnd wrote: Uh, ....what? Me thinks not. Project Floyd: Today I was able to accomplish three things... I changed the oil, installed the shifter boot and the new stereo (including pulling speaker and amp wires)... Need to figure out how to mount some 6x9 speakers in the cab corners...
I used a Lokar shift boot as after searching around, it seemed the best option.
I went with a RetroSound Malibu stereo for the Bluetooth (hands-free phone calls and live music stream from phone), USB, Aux, and multiple output options that it offers.
I spent some time on the phone will Holley, the tech there asked that I send him some data files from the ECU (which I did). He is going to spend some time and look them over, hopefully he'll be able to help me develop a better base tune.
82 hours invested, 1/4 mile, and one burn out.

Project Floyd: THE TRUCK IDLES and DRIVES! After swapping out the fuel rail to an '03 rail with the factory regulator and spending some quality time on the phone with Lee at Holley (my savior!!! THANK YOU). I now have a decent base tune to start from. This was massive step forward. The truck now has driven 1 mile! And demonstrated another issue... I need to work on the shift points in the transmission software... but, it'll idle and will drive great if I manually shift it!
