Project Floyd: The bed mounts are done! Took a little work, but well worth the effort! The front mount is 1.5"x3"x.063 wall tubing, same as the cab. I welded inserts into it to prevent crushing when the hardware is tightened down. The 2" spacers for the mid bed mounts on the fuel tank cross memeber were machined from 2" round stock. A piece of 2"x3"x1/8" wall tubing made up the new rear frame cross member and a couple of gusseted tabs off it for the rear bed mounts. The box is on and anchored down (sorry no picture). I finished the day by starting on the fuel filler neck, more on that tomorrow, along with the bed step, and if I'm lucky, the bumper!

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Yet another fabulous shop day! I was able to get the fuel filler neck squared away as planned. I'm very happy with how well the factory saddle tank filler worked out. Had to do some cutting and welding, but it worked out well.
picture host
From there, it was time to start on the bed. First up was welding the fender pieces back in. Then building a brace to support the floor. 1-1/4 channel iron worked perfect.
The floor will be made up of the previously removed floor pieces. I wanted to retain the corrugated floor for the strength and factory appearance.
pic host
I'll have to cut little pie pieces to weld into each gap... that'll be good and time consuming!
Hopefully I can spend a little more time on the bed tomorrow... though the chores are starting to back up! Stay tuned!

That is the best conversion as far as the bed floor yet! One of the things I don't like about the full frame conversion is how it affects the bed, but the way you are putting the floor back in...I love it!! Awesome job!! Who cares about chores around the house...they will still be there when your ready. Right now it's about finishing that truck so you have something to haul the supplies home for those chores!!!

Thanks! Wish I could have left the chores, but they have to be done, especially as I start my next stretch of days working tomorrow! But, I'll have time next week to get work done on it!

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Finally had time to work on the truck! I was able to get all of the structural welding in the bed done.
All that is left will be welding in the filler pieces for all of the gaps along the top edges. Hopefully I can get all of those (28) cut out and welded in tomorrow. That'll have the inside of the bed all wrapped up and then it'll be streetable!

Didn't have much time to work on the truck today... would have liked to finish welding the box up, but not in the cards.... so made up the wire loom for the rear tail lignts and plugged it into the chassis harness. Check that off the list.

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Project Floyd: Today I started off by welding the filler piece in to plug the factory fuel tank filler neck location up.
From there, I tackled the remainder of the bed floor... right up until I run out of wire in the welder! Fortunately, at that time I was just filling in a few holes that developed while grinding the welds down and rounding them off. I only have three left that'll need welded up Monday when I can go get some wire!
With that done, I'll fit the bumper, adjust the brake lever and the truck will be out of the shop!

Re: 1970 F100 Frame and Powertrain Swap (to 07 CrownVic running gear)
Project Floyd: Monster day for the truck today! I was able to wrap up the welding on the bed floor. Then I mounted the bumper (had to make new mounts, weld them into the bumper, drill the frame and then weld tube into the frame so that it wouldn't collapse).
I finished the day off by cutting down the tool box door!

The truck is back out of the shop!
I need to roll the rear fenders before I drive too far (don't want to trash the tires), the rear bumper is a heavy SOB, fortunately I have a set of Firestone air bags to install! I still need to adjust the brake pedal and order a new windshield... BUT those are just a few hours of work!

Oh yeah, I drove it... it was quite fast, not that I ever did anything over the legal speed limit mind you I'm fortunate that I have 3.55 gears and a Trac-Loc, so it keeps the traction to the ground.

Project Floyd: Had an hour this evening, so since the truck is licensed and insured... I used that hour to roll the rear inner fender lip. Bought a roller off FB used over the weekend, worked quite well...
so with that done, I went for a quick drive, filled the tank, and took the truck down the highway... smooth as glass. Gonna need cruise control!

.
This is what I call a medium bed. Removing only the front section. I'm contemplating this length for my bed and did a little photo editing comparison on my build thread. I personally think this length looks more balanced than either the standard short or long beds. I think the long wrap-arounds on the bumper detract from it a little, but we all have our own taste.
Still not convinced I'm going to chop mine, but if I do, it will be something like 12 or 13" from the front.

Is it an optical illusion, or is the rear of the bed a touch high?
