Broken transfer case
Hey all! I went down to my farm to cut out some sheet metal for my '69 F100 from a donor truck. I have three bumpsides down there (1.5 hours away) and the cab I'm working on is in my garage in the city. Anyways, down in the field I hooked up to a donor truck to pull it into the farm yard where I have power to run my grinder and Sawzall. It has a couple flat tires and has settled into the ground a bit. I tried 4 wheel high and it wouldn't budge. So I tried 4-low and all of a sudden crunch-crunch gear noise etc. I broke the transfer case housing. Wasn't even working it hard, just a few tugs. My everyday truck is a 2018 F150 regular cab shortbed 4x4. That was the end of the fun working on my project truck. Does anyone know what I can expect at the dealer? I have warranty, but powertrain warranty mentions "misuse" for not covering certain repairs. What would Ford deem as misuse? Surely you can pull a stuck vehicle without breaking a transfer case? I was able to get back to the city in 2 wheel drive no problem. Appreciate any comments or advice thanks.

Re: Broken transfer case
one thing I can say about Ford is they will look at the truck, especially undercarriage to see if you have been off road and deep mud etc.. when it comes to warranty issues.. on one of our trucks on a 6.0 diesel they looked and checked the undercarriage and all came out OK

I washed it up good, but there really wasn't anything to hide, a bit of tall grass from the field, and no mud because the ground is already froze down a few inches here in Saskatchewan. I'm scared I'll get hit with a big bill. Thanks for the info!

Re: Broken transfer case
As of this morning it's fixed, warranty covered it. They said they had never seen one break like that, so maybe I had a flawed unit. Anyways they look for "impact" damage while assessing warranty; any accident or hitting something like a large rock while off-roading.

Re: Broken transfer case
Glad everything went smooth for you.......I've had problems with Ford in the past getting warranty and recall work done......the worst was the Windstar cracked rear axle fiasco............
