OT - '92 Ranger no start problem

Post by sargentrs »

Having problems with my son's Ranger. Replaced solenoid still no power with key on or start. Battery has 12.5v, all connections clean and tight. Good power to source terminal on solenoid. Key on or start, nothing on starter side of solenoid or ignition wire. Hooked up remote starter switch. Key on and hit button on starter switch. Fuel pump turns on, dash lights up, everything works but no crank. Won't even turn the starter over. Battery drops to 10.8v and keeps going down. This is with and without jumper cables connected to good vehicle. Going to try with good battery installed but not holding hope on that. All fuses good. What's next? Clutch safety switch? Any and all input is greatly appreciated before I jack it up and try jumping directy to starter.

Unplug the safety switch on the clutch and put a jumper wire in the plug and see what that does......I had that happen on one of the Rangers i had......see if that helps! Just make sure you're in neutral before you spin it over if you're using a remote switch........don't ask why I'm saying that........

If the battery is dropping down to 10.8 when you try to spin the starter, its probably the starter itself most likely, or a battery if the battery is in real bad shape. If this were an interlock problem you wouldn't get that kind of voltage drop, battery voltage would stay at 12.5.

Thanks guys! I'm going to pull the battery out of my truck and try it before I dig any deeper.

I agree, unless its dropping which the key simply on, the battery voltage is dropping because the starter is pulling too much current.

Try smacking on the starter with a square peg in round hole installer ...
