Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
Sorry for the delay in posting. I spend most of my free time working on the truck. Work has continued. Next I cleaned the frame. Here is the process that I followed. First I power washed it to remove as much of the build up as possible. Next I sprayed it down with Goo Gone Gel. This works great on undercoating. I then power washed it again. Next I sprayed it down with a degreaser. I used CRC Hydroforce. I then power washed again. Finally I scrubbed it down with steel wool and Dawn Platinum dish washing liquid. I was really surprised how well it cleaned up.

Next I used a DA sander and went over the frame.

Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
I had noticed scratches on the frame when I first started. At this point I realized these are part these are left over from the manufacturing process. [a

Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
Then on to sandblasting. I am using Black Diamond fine from Tractor supply. I am using my HF Pressure Blaster. I have performed all the usual mods and it works flawless. This makes a huge mess so you have to have a spot to do this. I have also done this using sand in my driveway. It looked like the Sahara once finished. Now I am using a temporary garage with a large tarp on the floor and up the walls. This was much easier to clean up and I was able to recycle the abrasive.

Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
This was much quicker then using sand. I completed this in about 8 working hours.

Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
There are many options when choosing to finish the frame. Powder coating, all kinds of rust encapsulators, paints etc. My last frame I used John Deere Blitz Black Tractor paint. It was inexpensive and tough and looks good but I decided on a different product. Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum as a base followed by a top coat of their 2K Ceramic Chassis Black Satin. I have some rust pitting that I want to cover. Eastwood says to spray the Platinum and then sand it down like a polyester primer. Followed by a second application. If any filler is to be used is should be sandwiched between the two application. Top coat if desired. With the Platinum they recommend a 1.4 tip and can be sprayed right out of the can. I did not have any Xylene to thin it so I sprayed without thinning. It left a textured surface so I knew I should have thinned it. This worked to my advantage as it was thicker and helped to fill in the pits. Next I sanded it down starting with 80 grit and ending with 220. The directions say sand with 320 but the stuff was so hard it would have taken forever to get smooth it out. Next I used some 3M Platinum Glaze and applied a skim coat. After done with the filler I applied another application of the Eastwood Platinum. This time I thinned it 20% and it went on nice and smooth. After a couple of days I ran some 320 across it and sprayed it with the 2K Chassis Satin Black.

Next came the 2nd application of the Platinum Encapsulator. It looks really nice and could have been left as is. But I wanted black.

Re: PaPa's 69 F100 Explorer
Finally 3 coats of 2K Ceramic Chassis Satin Black. As you can see in the pictures it does have a slight texture to it. I don't know if its the way I applied it or if it is intended to be this way. I am a total noob when it comes to painting. I would rather it had been smooth but I am happy with it.
