Reviving my air conditioner, where to start?

Post by alvald83 »

I have a 1969 F50 that came with factory air that has never worked since i've owned the truck (6 years). The system is complete parts wise, although i removed the AC compressor fan belt 2 years ago. My question is. Where is a good place to start to gt it going? When the the fan belt was installed i could hear the ac clutch engage when i turned it on. Thanks for your help. Al

I would say flush the system isopropyl alcoholn blow it out with compressed air, then pull it apart and put new o rings in the whole system pull a vacuum and hope it seals. Now as to weather the pump will work with the R-134a could not tell you but the o rings will when you replace them with 134 compatible o rings.

I think the first step would be is to hook up gauges and see what ( if anything ) is in there. If there is any pressure still i would get it evacuated at a shop with a recovery machine. If it were me, I think I would then put a vacuum on the system and see what happens. does it hold vacuum, does it bleed off right away, kind of thing. Then decide if you want to open the system up or not. If the a/c compressor has its own sump for oil, then check its oil level before trying to engage it.
