Late model 1972 f100 question
I can't find the vin where fortification says it should be. I only see it in the doorjamb, both locations and on the warranty tag in the engine compartment. I did find some numbers stamped on the frame in front of the steering box, but I don't know what they are. Help!!!

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
There should also be vin numbers on top of the passenger side frame rail close to where the cab curves down I believe. They will probably be hard to read with dirt in there.

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
You'll probably need to wire brush the top of the frame to be able to see them clearly.........passenger side top rail across from where the alternator mounts.....mine came from a dry climate and I still had to do that to see them for the vin check here in Ohio.......

I checked there, well actually behind the axle because it's a 4x4. Nothing at all along the top of the frame.

Also, so what are the numbers stamped into the front drivers side frame rail? Up by the power steering?

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
It is the frame ID number, the D2TA would indicate it was made in 1972. Here is a thread that talks about it:

Awesome! Getting somewhere.
Will the vin be stamped like the above picture? Because I am seeing bare metal and can't see any vin number on the passenger side frame rail.

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
It should be a single line of letters, and numbers that should match the other vin numbers on the vin tag on your door, unless someone replaced the door in the past and didn't keep the original vin tag. It looks like your frame is pretty rusty from your picture, so you may need to clean up the frame a little better to see the stamped vin number. Did you see this information on decoding your vin tag? http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN72.htm

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
Yep. Saw all that. I have the sticker in the driver's door cab that matches the vin tag on the door, and the vin tag in the engine compartment. Everything matches up on the vin that is on the truck. Sport custom, engine, tranny, 4x4, color, axles ,but the only problem is I got this truck for free and no title. Hasn't been registered for 30 years. I need to do a "ownership in doubt" and I don't know if they will just go off the door vin, or will look for the frame vin. I am going to get after it today.

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
Well after 4 hours nothing. Put navy jelly on both places, it's a little pitted but nothing bad. Underneath the undercoating looks brand new. I would think even after all these years I would see something. Again this trucks build date was August of 72. So maybe it was in a different place? Even under the cab there is nothing.

Re: Late model 1972 f100 question
Can you get pics of where you're looking at on the frame? On my 72 frame it's on the rightside frame rail in two places. one is just in front of where the spring perch mounts to the frame on top of the rail and the other place is on top of the same frame rail right between the right side cap mounts.
That part number you found is on the side of the left frame rail at the front like mine. Your vin number will start with a Star like symbol and end with one as well.

Here is some interesting information on late model 1972 production numbers vs 1973 production numbers:
