I used a large file then a sander to clean up the machined surfaces. Doing this caused the loss of the machine marks but I had to get rid of the pits.

Dam dude, you are really making progress. I also pulled my springs apart and cleaned them up. I know they were coated with some kind of black coating. I painted mine with a Grafite Paint called EZ-Slide. I didn't find any insulators between the leafs, but they also could have been apart before.

I am really confused about the silver paint I found. I hope someone can comment on that. Someone painted on the black, turned out the third member had been painted as well, more to come on that. I really considered the EZ slide but wound up going with the spring liners. I am going to try to post more tomorrow, more to show on the rear end.

Next up is the third member, chunk, pumpkin or the thing that goes inside the housing. The third member had been painted with a spray can Black. This was a surprise as it meant someone had been inside it before. I also noticed black spray paint on the leaf springs that I did not understand. I really searched my memory for an answer. As I stated early on this truck has been in the family since new. Because I am really the only one to work on it since the early 80's I knew this must have been done early in it's life. Finally it came to me. When I was a kid probably around 10 yrs old (this must have been around 74) I remember visiting my grandparents. My Grandfather whom is the original owner was telling my parents about a kid taking the truck for a joy ride, (all keys were always in the ignition on the farm). I don't know who it was but I think it was a second cousin or something. Anyway he got it stuck in the pasture and somehow destroyed the rear end. Not an easy thing to do to a 9 inch. It was never spoken of again. The good thing for me is that the poor paint job preserved the marking underneath. The paint came off with little effort.

Turns out it has the correct Ford 3.25 ratio gear set, but Timken bearings.
