Starting stripping paint on the box today [LG PICS]

Post by FORDification »

I decided to take the afternoon off and got started stripping the paint off the box I just brought home. Got the outer panels 99.9% down to bare metal.

That dark-colored patch on the left side is where the sheetmetal got rust-pitted where the paint wore off. I'm planning on sandblasting that area to get rid of all rust, sand it back down, and then a couple coats of primer/surfacer should smooth it right out. However, the lower rear corner on that side is going to take a little hammer and dolly work. It was beat up by the previous owner, who apparently gave a half-hearted attempt at straightening it out and then covered it with filler. It'll take at least an afternoon or two to smooth it out a little more. It's not really that bad:

I'll be in the shop again on Sunday to get some more work done on this. :D

Hey, I just found out I actually get TWO days in the shop! I'm hitting the ground running tomorrow morning (early) but have to quit about 3PM, but then I get to spend the whole day on Sunday there. :woohoo: Should be able to get a lot done. Unfortunately, I'm about out of 3M stripper wheels so I guess I'll have to find something else to do other than finish the paint-stripping until I can restock. The ones I've been getting locally are about $15 each, but at the local Harbor Freight store I can get 'em for about $6 each, so it's looking like I need to make another run to the city.

Side panels of your bed look very good! The seams are clean, huh? The repaired ding looks like it doesnt need much additional work. Have fun, what are you going to use for primer?

why dont you just get a can of aircraft stripper, some heavy duty gloves, and an old wash towel. wipe it down with the stripper, then come back 15 minutes later with a bondo squeegee, and a water hose.

I just read your story on the run to get it, sounds and looks like a really nice truck. I'd like to stumble into something similar when I have the time to take it on.
Bumpless for now...
