chilton or other manuals??

The best you can buy is the factory shop manual... I have had haynes and chilton's both, and brother, let me tell you...

Theyare WORTHLESS. you cannot find what you are looking for, and if you do, you will find stuff like this:

FRONT PINION SEAL REMOVAL: Remove front end. Find some kind of puller. Remove yoke from pinion shaft. Remove pinion seal. CAUTION::: WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!! Careful: don't screw pinion seal up as you are replacing it. Replace yoke, torquing it to a guesstimate figure. re-hang front end. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND USE JACK STANDS AND DON'T GET HURT!!!!

Seriously, I'm not making that up, cause I looked it up the other night. I wouldn't waste my money on a haynes or a chilton's

Yeah, Chilton and Haynes aren't thought out very well. On one car I was working on a couple of years ago the book told me how to test the O2 sensor with a volt meter, another area of the same book cautioned me to never test the O2 sensor with a volt meter. And you'll find things like spelling errors and bad grammar too. And like BFB pointed out, all the stupid warnings and cautions are very annoying too. My Chilton insists they didn't offer the C-6 in 69.
But, they beat having nothing, so if you get them, get both of them, You'll find Haynes has more pictures and more detail in wiring, but it's a small book so what they don't cover there's a good chance the Chilton will. They compliment each other.

the best manuals by far are the pro. addition hard covers you might say your chilton manual sucks but my bet is you are using a home owner addition.

Know with that said you can get the pro additions on cd whats the difference no paper. Personally I love my Michel on demand set(snap-on has the same) although costly and out of reach of most home mechanics, it is great.

my chiltons book doesn't have a 360 or 390 list for any of the years it covers. but it does have info on the 361 and 391. is mostly for helping the other guy here with pics and stuff. i woulnd have it but i got it for free out of a repo house.

no i used to clean up repo mobile homes. I got all kind of neat stuff for free.

fm- i did some post departure/ pre-repo inspections on mbl hm/mfg housing units- some of them were appalling

My vote is for the factory shop manual .
I was looking though a haynes manual (1973-79 ford truck) the other day and some of the engine pictures are the same as the pictures in the ford shop manual , In my mind I would say that haynes gets their info form the factory shop manuals ........
I think the shop manuals on CD rom are the way to go , as someone else pointed out , you don't get the books all messed up with grime and grease .
Just print out the pages that you need .

i had hid mine from myself- i have a chiltons ford pick-ups 1965 thru 1984(part no. 6913)- i realize it is not as complete as a factory book but in comparison to some other chiltons and haynes i have it is fairly comprehensive- publishing date 1984- don't know if it is currently published- anyway it works for me
