re: AlleyCat's 67 F100 build * update 7 - 27 - 08 *
I'm hammering on this thing as hard as possible because shortly it will have to be put on hold for a month or so. My goal is to get it mobile before I hit the " HOLD" button. Here's some more.
I'm working on the wiring and as I said earlier these trucks do have their short comings in the electrical system. I reworked the alternator harness from a dent to replace the trashed original. Dents used a fusible link to protect the charging circuit which I incorporated into the system. I also added another fusible link into the cab feed circuit. The fusible link for the alternator is hidden by the harness but the one I added is the short yellow wire that is sticking out of the harness.
In this pic you can see the wiring for the senders and ignition. I used the original engine harness for the gauges along with a Duraspark harness from an early 80's F350. Although it's hidden behind the carb I also added a power wire for the electric choke. The harness is purposely routed below the master cylinder to account for a future power brake booster. All that's left to finish the engine wiring is to add feed wires for the choke and ignition module. The original resistance wire for the coil has been dead headed and it's feed will be used to power the Duraspark coil.
It's starting to look like a truck again.

Ryan, I don't know if you've watched any of the Ice Road Truckers episodes but one of the drivers, Hugh Rowland, has a catch phrase that I fell in love with.1971ford wrote:i cant believe you thought about puttings this truck down when you have been building it up SOOO fast

Update.... " FIRE IN THE HOLE "
Last night I got the wiring finished. This morning I was on a mission. Got up early and got my household stuff done. By 7:15 I was outside. Put the dash back together, finished the gas line, installed the rad, fan, shroud, belts and hoses. Since I needed to flush the rad anyway it got filled with water and Cascade dishwasher soap. Gave it a few cranks to get gas up to the carb, kicked the pedal to the floor twice, hit the key and away it went.
Only glitch was the alternator wasn't charging. I went back over the wiring but it was okay. Did a full field test and the alternator checked out. Had to be the voltage regulator. 3 used regulators later I found one that works. 2 rounds of Cascade and water then twice more with plain water and the rad was clean. Pulled the block drains and let it drip all afternoon. This evening I put the drain plugs back in and filled it 50/50 antifreeze/water mix. Other than clean up this one is on hold for a month or so. Next round is gonna involve welding sheet metal.
Stay tuned.

This project is a big help to me right now. I've had the chance to go thru a bunch of stuff and sort out good from bad. The more that gets used is the less I've got to climb over.67 ford f100s rule wrote:keep on keepin on Alley.I wish i could kick it into high gear like you did.i just dont have what i need though.

Great work so far. I'll be using alot of dentside wiring for my project. I just may have to hit you up with some "how'd you do it" questions along the way.

Time to blow the dust off of this thread. This project is taking a whole new direction. I just bought a 74 F250 highboy crew. It's been rolled but frame and driveline are okay. In the fall I'm planning to drop the 67 sheet metal on to the high boy frame.

Here's a pic of the highboy. It still has some good body panels and crew specific items that are salvagable to help fund the build. Engine is supposed to be a 390 but until I check the stroke it's anybody's guess.

What a shame! Looks like somebody rolled a pretty well preserved old truck. You're gonna have a little extra frame aren't you? Nice to hear from you Clay. It's been a while.

I knew I'd have to shorten the frame before I bought it. I have both the skills and tools to do it so it's not a problem for me.
If you look at the pic, behind the highboy, you can see a black cab with stacks. The belongs to a Peterbilt roll off truck. The rear frame of the Pete was bent by a careless driver while loading a box of demo rubble. One of my projects for fall is to remove the roll off hoist, pull the lift axle then move the drive axles forward about 7 feet and remount everything. While I'm at it I'll be adding a 5th wheel and trailer hookups. A former roll off truck will become a short, heavy spec tractor and get another life pulling a car crusher.

That's right, I just remembered that you started the new job at that wrecking yard. You must have access to some pretty useful stuff.
