we did disassemble the clutch packs. heres a picture of it all layed out.
but like i said, we didnt know how to thoroughly examine the clutch packs. but there was no obvious cracks or missing pieces or anything. so it all went back together the way it came out.

how did these lok when you got them out. were they all smooth looking or did they have some texture to some of them and the steel ones were just flat and plain.and how did the old fluid smell. did it smell lik eit was buring tires or something like that? or an electrical burning smell?

i dont remember what they looked like but they must of not been too bad for us to not notice. i mean we did look at the parts for obvious damage.

still on the hunt for another tranny, im not sure this video tells you anything, but here is shifting into 2nd gear. jumps up 500rpm :o you cant feel the jolt and hard shift but you can hear it and see the rpm's.

Maybe it's just me, but looking at the pictures, I don't believe I see the pistons out of the drums.

If that's the case, you've probably got some hard/leaking seals in the drums that allow the fluid to seep by. :(

I've owned and/or serviced many Ford trucks with C6 tranny's, and I know for a fact that the seals are notorious for getting brittle. This is especially true of the forward clutch. Try cranking the thing up and getting it to move in a forward direction on a cold morning, and see how long it takes for the tranny to engage!!!

My 70 Ranger XLT is suffering from this now, but as long as I can get it to move for the next few months, I'll live with it, because I plan to tear it down next spring for a full frame-off resto. :woohoo:

Take this as a lesson learned. I've learned a lot of lessons the hard way with transmissions. Just be thankful it was your transmission and not something you must have running. The drum seals are critical and they're a PITA to get to if you don't have a snapress. If somebody tells me they rebuilt their auto, it was easy and I know they don't have a snapress it's pretty easy to conclude they didn't do it right. You can get the pistons out of the drums and back in without a press, but you'll hate life doing it!

Almost every part that comes in an auto rebuild kit fits in there somewhere. If you have a bunch of leftover parts when your "rebuild" is done you need to ask questions. I gaurantee you if you walk into a transmission shop (or the place you bought the rebuild kit from) and politely ask if you could pick a rebuilder's brain on a C-6 you have they'd be more than happy to help. If you don't have a snapress I'm sure they'd put the drum seals in for you for little or nothing.

Im not sure if the piston were pulled from the drums, ill have to ask my dad. And yes we did have a couple seals left over and when we put the tranny back together i had a bad feeling about it.
Next tranny we rebuild we will get some help from a pro. A guy i know from the desert-races that is helping me get parts and such gave me the number of a guy that would be glad to help rebuild our tranny. Definately a lesson learned.
So if there was a bad seal that we didnt replace, could the slipping of the tranny destroy other parts like the clutch packs? when this tranny comes back apart we will have everything checked out but just wondering.

Yes, they could be destroyed.

Always replace all of the seals and all of the clutches.

That's why they are packed in the overhaul kit. :nono:
