oh and that rust on that trans isnt good enough fo rme to spend money even ifit is a good deal. clean the rust off with some emery cloth and oil it. and then take a picture before you post anything for sale.

Re: 4 speed trans out of galaxie 500
I have to disagree with the cleaning it. Unfortunately too many inexperienced people destroy perfectly good stuff by "cleaning it up to sell". In the restoration business we much prefer to buy rusty parts than parts that some guy sanded or blasted. Unfortunately many original finishes are destroyed and original paint daubs and markings are removed in the process. A spotless clean 4441 Carter fuel pump that has been bead blasted and cleaned will bring less than half of the exact same pump in similar condition to the trans shown. When it comes to collector car parts let the professionals do the restoration if you are not familiar with the process. In the case of a trans like this one, the case would first be washed with mild soap and water and then mineral spirits if need be. The input should be cleaned with a mild phosphoric acid bath which will remove any rust but not solid metal and will not mar the surface. Never wire brush or wire wheel a part and don't bead blast any part unless its original finish was paint. Hawkrod

Re: 4 speed trans out of galaxie 500
I am hoping to find something with the shifter on the floor. Don't really care if it is manual or automatic. but it needs to have a four gear to drive on the highway smoothly at 65 mph. I have a dana 60 3.54 gears. so I don't know what to do. I need a list of trannys with an almost direct fit.

Re: 4 speed trans out of galaxie 500
I have a toploader 4spd out of a 67 Fairlane I think. It has the right tailshaft length and I used my same driveshaft. Its in a 68 F-100 with a big block f.e. and 3:50 gears in the rear. Its a good combination to drive and hot rod a little. All I had to do was move the tranny mount and drill new holes and bolt it up.Also if your using a bench seat a Mustang shifter by Hurst works great. All I did was cut half way into the shifter handle and bend it 3/16 and weld it up and bingo. Hope this helps Brian.

OMG, I think I found the top-loader just like yours but I wouldn't know if it would work.

Re: 4 speed trans out of galaxie 500
I think one of the closest "bolt-up" units with overdrive for an FE would be a Clark 5-speed off of a FT block.
I have looked around for one for a while and haven't found one in my price range yet.
You need a bunch of stuff from the FT. ie: the bellhousing, pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel.
You need to do some minor mods to the flywheel to bolt it to the FE crank. After that, you put it together like any other standard trans set-up. The Clark 5-speeds are top loaders, not sure about cross members, and i believe you will have to get your front drive shaft redone to mate up to the Clark.
The Clark series trans you are looking for is a VO model. ie: 261VO, 280VO, ect. Just make sure it came off of an FT block and you shouldn't have any input shaft issues.
You will need the FT bell housing because the Clark runs a different pattern than the NP435 or T-18. FT and FE used the same pattern so it will bolt right up. Input shaft has different splines than the 4-speeds. Thats why you need the pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel. pressure plate and disc for reference to make sure you get the correct replacements. Flywheel for the correct bolt-up.
You may be able to re drill your FE flywheel to accept the larger parts, but i have never compared the two side by side to know for sure.
Its the only option i know of for an Overdrive behind an FE that doesn't require an adapter plate to fit a newer trans.
