I got my liscence at the tender age of 7. Passed the morse code and everything. At the time I was the youngest to do it. But i've been out so long they don't even have a novice class anymore lol. I can remember dad slinging antennas with a fishing rod and hanging them in the trees around the house. You'll love having it. Its something really special! have fun with it!

I've worked people that young on the radio, so don't doubt it at all.
In fact, I think I might remember you if it was in an article or QST, etc
back in the mid to late 80's or so..
They have featured a young ones over the years in QST.

oh no i'm not that old. I was born in 84. so it would have been around 91-92 ish. I barely remember doing it. I was sitting at my dad's friends house at the coffee table with a pen and paper jotting down morse code as he tapped it while sitting in his recliner. But yes little ones are out there. All the men thought it was so great that not only I was young but a girl too. Dad'd take me to bbq's and stuff full of Ham ops. Somewhere i have a box full of those postcards that you sent. But like i said its been a while so i don't know what all has changed. My dad adopted my granddad's call sign WB4EOE. I assume it was retired when he passed? Mine was KD4KBA and mom was KD4KAZ. I always thought it was so cool becuase mom got to say ZED instead of z :) lol

Thanks for the pics and short vid NM5K!!

Daddysgirl,
That is special that you were so young when you got licensed! Sounds like your not active anymore, though. Thanks for the stories, "Being able to say zed", that made me laugh!

W4RFM, I was a broadcast engineer for about 30 years. Always enjoy building tube AM rigs.

Probably the best final tube ever made.. That was one of my few
gripes with Drake.. They used those danged 6JB6 sweep tubes
which were only rated about 17.5 watts dissipation if I remember right.
When I was running the T4XB a lot, I went through a lot of those things,
and I am a quick tuner upper.. :/
Where with the 6146, I've hardly ever had to change one of those that
wasn't already toast when I got it. But they are rated 25-35 watts
dissipation. Almost double the 6JB6..
My old TS-830 uses those.. And I used to run a Heath HW-100 that
used em.. And better not forget the Viking Valiant I once had..
Five of those things.. Three for finals, and two as modulator tubes.
That thing was a tank.. Wish I still had it. Would be good for AM.
Also lots of single 6146 90 watt novice transmitters sold through the years.
Course, back in the day you had to run 75w until you upgraded to General, and
then you could run it flat out if you wanted. Most of those would run AM phone.

I used to run RTTY on my Heathkit SB-102 (which I still have) and after a few minutes I could lift the lid and watch the red glow of the plates in the final cage, and the thing kept cranking away near 200W and didnt miss a beat. Tubes were awesome plus they kept my shack nice and warm too.

On the subject of Ham Radios, I was sitting in my old high schools parking lot today waiting to pick up my brother listening to my cb. I skiped through the channels and on channel 11 I picked up a transmission from the eastside of the Big Island Hawaii. :D I thought that was cool one because I live in El Paso, to bad I could talk back to them. :o.

My wife has said that I don't need a radio to be a Ham
