I bought my 77 460 with everything I need to install it in my 71 F100 except the drive shaft for $350 and that came with 2 C-6's.
It was a stock engine that ran fine though I did do some work to it later on. I say look around for a donor truck that has everything you need for the swap.

I bought a 460 and C-6 in a 75 F-350 chassis with the cab and all the drive train including disc brakes on the front for 500 bucks and I got another 460 and C-6 for a tool box. Not a Mac box either. It was a used $100 dollar Craftsman box!

Alright guys, I need some more advice here on this very same motor. He has it advertised again: http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/1823487149.html

I contacted the seller and he is staying firm on the $1800, but he has come about $1k off the orginal price which includes everything.

My question is are the DOVE-C heads worth what he thinks they are vs. the going rate? I don't really know how much they are really worth and my searches have turned up anywhere from $200 to $1200. He has a link to an ebay listing stating they are the same spec. and completely rebuilt. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-FOR ... 3eff8a722c

The things that are missing are carb, intake, flywheel, rocker arms, and valve covers. It is also setup with a rear sump 8qt oil pan that I am not sure if it will work in my 2wd truck, but I know that shouldn't be very difficult to change.

Please let me know what ya'll think about this for $1800. If it seems to be a fair deal, I will go check it out and pick it up if it looks to be as good as it sounds.

Thanks in advance! Bill

Thanks for the reply Bobby, these unkowns are my apprehentions and I am ignorant to what is a good deal.

fwiw, I have been looking at 460.com all day and cant find anything defenitive, but the price does seem to be high. Everything else seems to be fairly priced when you group it all together. I just recall paying 2k to have my 352 rebuilt and everything he has is completely rebuilt and new. He claims to be losing money and lost his job, and other stuff... btw, I did register with 460ford and confirm my registration by email, but when I go to post it says I am blocked for some reason.

I am still looking at a pretty mild build. My goal is 300 hp at the rear wheels. I don't plan on going over 400bhp. I would venture to guess that adding the extras that are needed would'nt be too terribly expensive when comparing to buying a turnkey motor. Doing a build from scratch is not my thing because I dont have the mechanical ability to confidently assemlbe a motor from scratch.

Thanks for the reply!

Have you priced building a motor yourself, I know you say that youve never built a motor but a machine shop could build the short block for you then you finish putting the heads, intake and everything else on it. Then you would have a motor thats built the way you want and youll know what youve got when its done. im sure theres a 460 in a 70s pick-up at a pick-n-pull that would be a good donor for you plus you could get everything you needed with it. When changeing engine sizes its always the things you dont think of that start getting more than you wanted to spend. Just a thought but have you checked with machine shops to see if they have a engine thats not been paid for, around here if someone has work done and dont finish paying for it the machine shop will give them some time then if they dont come up with the money they sell it to get there money back. Might be worth a call to check.

The Dove heads you asked about are way over priced it seems to me.
I have had 2 sets I got for around $200 but ended up selling them due to money reasons.
I would look for a doner truck with a 460 in it myself, that is what I did. I bought everything I needed from the 77 F150 including two C-6's for $350. This was a running engine and all the swap parts I needed. I did end up doing a refresh on the engine later but it only cost me a couple hundred.
