Seems like I have to put at least $20 in it to get to the next gas station...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I fill both tanks on the daily. Pay the bill at the end of the month. 72 gets $20 - $25 at a time. I fill it in the fall before it gets parked for winter.

I fill mine. My gas guage doesn't work, plus, it's good to occasionally fill up to keep rust from forming in the tank. I've seen a lot of tanks with rust up top because people never put more than half a tank in them. My 71 had so much fine rust in the tank because of this that it clogged up a new fuel pump filter in about a week! I had to remove the tank, build a "spit", fill it with fish tank gravel and tumble it for a couple hour to get it all out. The original owner told me he'd mever had more than half a tank in it.

Good morning!!!

#50 (my Bumpside) has been getting about three gallons every four months lately, since that's all that's required to power it through various joy-rides around the lot. It's not street-legal yet! And its tank was recently cleaned and sealed (with the POR-15 gas tank package), so there aren't any rust concerns.

Other than this special case, I always fill up everything all of the way, no matter what.

My father Hugh shared memories of gas crunches that he witnessed over the years. It seems that people would line up around the block, hoping for a few gallons, and many would be turned away (when the station reached its daily limit, or sold out, or whichever). I heard from Hugh that although things appear to be stable with the fuel supply, when gas crunches hit, there's often little if any warning. So it's a good idea to have a full tank or two in your fleet.

There are also emergencies from time to time. Can you imagine being ordered to evacuate your area due to a huge wild fire, and only having a few gallons in your tank (perhaps not enough to complete the evacuation)? At a time like that, it might not be possible to stop for gas (since the stations might either be shut down, or insanely jammed with people in the same situation).

Also, would you agree that no running vehicle should ever be left without enough fuel to drive it to the nearest hospital and/or police station? Having to stop for gas during a medical emergency could be a life-or-death matter, since it's not always possible to wait for an ambulance, especially if one lives in a rural location. I know about this from experience (I had enough gas, and my father survived).

And how about always backing our trucks in to their parking spaces, to ensure a departure free of complications (especially in case the emergency driver isn't good with trucks)?

I almost always fill my daily driver Mustang up to the brim. I drive 37 miles to and from work, so anything less than half a tank is point less. The bump (which is my weekend work truck) usually gets 1/2-3/4 a tank, Sometimes it get 5 gallonsfrom a can because it sometimes doenst go to town for a month or more. I live 12 miles from a gas station, so she can work around my community all week end and use a 1/4 of a tank or less. I been driving 2 weeks and used 1/4 tank. My 94 F150 is just sitting so occationally it gets $5 and rips up the dirt roads for a few miles.

I live 15 miles from the nearest gas station/town and drive 60 miles to work each way. What's the point of putting $10 in? The truck very rarely gets taken to work at 10 miles per gallon, but even just towing the camper, hauling scrap and cleaning up branches is the yard will eat up a 1/2 tank in a hurry. I fill em up!

as it has sat the last month and 1/2 i have only put ten in when i'm going to drive it. now on the cougar i get a month out of a full tank at 40-50 dollars per full tank. Wich is awesome when i can float on the gas i allready have instead of constantly full.

I'd love to be able to keep them always full but heh it's ok this way too.

I can't remember the last time I didn't fill up one of my vehicles when getting fuel. Since it all gets used and none goes to waste, anything less than a fill-up is just going to require more frequent stops = waste of time.

On edit: Back when I was a high school kid, I would often just put in $10 at a time. That was back before I started using a credit card and when I wanted an excuse to drive somewhere. Nowadays, stopping for gas is just a nuisance.

My dad always told me "It doesn't cost anymore to fill it up than to only put in a little at a time" I usually fill mine up unless I am short of money. Seems I am usually short of money these days and I really don't HAVE to go anywhere except a Doc. Appointment once a month. If I take my wife's car for gas I always fill it and so does she. She has a regular job though

that initial large bite is too scary for me to deal with.. :/ Also, at the moment I
don't have a locking gas cap on it.. I don't want 20 gallons of gas walking off in
gas cans.
But it would actually be better if I did fill it all the way up. Especially in the winter.
You have much less water condensation and tank rust if you keep it full most of the time.
I'm more likely to fill the car being as it doesn't cost as much. It also has a locking door
over the gas cap. Just a twenty will almost fill that thing if it's got a little left in the tank
when I fill it.. Even bone dry and on E, it only takes about $30 at the current $2.50 a gallon.
Of course, on the highway traveling, I always fill to the brim no matter what I'm driving.
Why in the world would you siphon gas from a bump? 30 seconds under it with a screw driver and it will drop into a gas can while you watch from a distance.

Personally I am lazy so I always fill it up all the way if I have to go to the gas station.

All I know is if you are going to drive around on half a tank, it better be the top half!!
I got told that when I was about 16 and ran out of fuel, in my defence the gas gauge didn't work.
