The Mitchell campers were built by "Mitchell and Sons" from the early 60's through the mid 80's. They were built in a factory in Commerce City, Colorado. During the 70's, they were the main manufacturers of campers, fifth wheels, and class C motorhomes in Colorado. They were very well built, heavy, and each one was ordered from the factory. My dad owned 2 during his life time on his Ford F250's. A Mitchell camper actually made the cover of the 1973 Ford "Recreational Vehicle" guide/sales brochure which is amazing for a small, local family owned manufacturer. They went out of the RV business and today the grandsons build modular homes and deck kits. There are still some old Mitchells running around Colorado and a loyal following. I guess I like them because they bring me back some very fond memories of my dad and family growing up with those old Fords and Mitchells. What makes them kind of cool is that they were usually painted to match the pickups that they sat on. The pics of the campers on this thread are kind of cool because they were built and matched to the Fords and were never separated.

Here's a pic of a 68 F250 with matching Mitchell camper. :D

A couple of pics of my '79 Mitchell 11' cabover camper on my 72 F250 CS. It's a big camper at around 2900 pounds when loaded but the F250 holds it pretty well.

Great thread! Below are pics of our 1971 F350 Scamper. The truck was built in Ontario, Canada. The camper was built in Lethbridge, Alberta by a company called Pre-Built Manufacturing. Going by the documents that came with the truck, It spent the first half of its life on the west coast, in British Columbia. Then for the second half of its life it ended up on the east coast where it is now, in Nova Scotia. It has 115,000 miles on the original 390 engine. The previous owner and her husband kept it stored indoors during the winter for the last 11 years. Her husband was a licensed mechanic who kept it well-maintained.

Here is a video of our test drive:

We did some interior painting and I made new cushion covers and curtains for the interior. Interior pics are here:

We're trying to find some indoor storage for the old girl for the winter. If we can't find anything we'll buy a proper RV cover for it.

Cheers,
Cindy

Thanks Terry! I love your Mitchell Camper too - and it looks great sitting on top of Ole' Blu! Our first road trip with the camper is next weekend - 3 hours to destination. I hope the old truck proves roadworthy for a long trip! She has to pull herself up a couple of mountains too. Fingers are crossed. :) I'll be photo and video documenting the trip of course!

Nice scamper Cindy! Its hard to find these campers in good shape and it looks as if you have managed to find one.....specially stored indoors when not in use...that makes a huge differance. Thanks for the pics and hopefully the more to come!

Thanks! I'll post some more pics and video after the weekend. It should be a blast - I can't wait! :D I'll get to drive the camper home too, as Jeff will be driving his Jeep.

Those are sweet! Do you have any idea when the first truck slide-in camper was made? I was trying to find out when trucks like mine were made too, with the chassis cab cutaways. I found one website that said the first Class C motor homes were made in the early 70's. I have the brochure for when my Ford Scamper first was made, and it was 1970. Mine is a 1971. Not sure how many years they were made after that before they went to the van style front.

I know that I've seen the Class C with truck chassis as early as the early 60's in production form. Below is a Mitchell Class C on a 67 F250 with only 49K original miles.

What a cool looking rig. To be classified as a Class C though, doesn't there have to be a pass-through to the cab? The truck you just posted has a bench seat, which leads me to believe there was no pass-through/cutaway to the cab. I'm not 100% sure though.
