Re: New shoes for the crew
That crew cab looks like something that used to be parked in the national guard armory near my house 20 years ago. Super awesome look!
Great job finding those tires and wheels. If I had an old highboy or crew cab with 4wd, I'd try to get some tall skinny tires with large lugs too.

Re: New shoes for the crew
Thanks guys!
Yeah, from what I read siping them can make a huge difference in the wet road handling, so yesterday morning I spent about an hour with a razor knife cutting slits across the middle of the tread about every 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I would have had it professionally done but the only place that could do it (2 hours away) said that their siping machine won't do a 36" diameter tire. I can already see the sipes have opened up a little so they should help if I get stuck in a storm. I was just going to leave them alone but then I saw one post where the wet handling of NDTs was described as "evil" and I figured I better do something to help.cowbay wrote:Truck looks great, but like you said be careful in the rain. Looks really good. How does the truck ride with them? 36" tall ought to give you some ground clearance!

Re: New shoes for the crew
It actually rides great! I think the heft and length of the truck helps with that, but they don't feel any worse than the 33" mud terrains that were on it. If anything it may be a bit smoother. As for ground clearance, lets just say I'm going to have to look into some aluminum steps to get in her a bit easier. I can grab the steering wheel and hoist myself in, but I think the gal is gonna have a rough time getting in the passenger side.

Re: New shoes for the crew
Hm interesting to know people have had traction issued with tall and skinny. I drive like a grandpa so maybe im just not driving it hard enough to get those issues. So far though weve had some really outrageous rainfall and i havent had any religious experiences. (thankfully) Hopefully you dont either. Again, totally dig the look. looks cool and time period correct.

Re: New shoes for the crew
I don't think tall and skinny is the issue; it's the blocky NDT tread design that doesn't have any sipes in it. The wide solid center section tends to slip and cause hydroplaning. That's why I siped mine. You should be fine.1972hiboy wrote:Hm interesting to know people have had traction issued with tall and skinny. So jealous, that looks great!!
I can't believe you scored all that for $100.
I am looking EVERYWHERE for 16" 8 lug steel rims and can't find them anywhere near me... and you go and buy that for $100?
Not talking to you anymore.
