hard to see in the last picture but when i took the distributor off there was one of my lifters sitting there. Well, that ain't right!

Old truck looks pretty good. Thankfully it has a nice straight body line indicating that the front cab mounts are still doing their job.

I usually post pics in 480x640 and they are easier to view without being too large.

I got the intake manifold off this afternoon and found three more lifters lying in the valley.

the intake gasket was worn near the front and rear on both sides but no actual leaks.

I'm going to replace all lifters and new heavy duty push rods. I tapped on all the valves with a rubber mallet and they have movement so I'm going to leave them for now.
As i reassemble how do i properly adjust the lash? I watched a few videos, even one with a 390 (mine is 360) but just looking for any tips. Thanks.

Man those cast iron engine parts (manifold) are heavy!

Not necessarily. As i understand it if i take off the heads on these old things I'm likely to break the exhaust manifold in places. I'd rather only tackle that if i have to

Everything on these things is heavy, and yes, the exhaust manifolds can be a royal pain in the rear, but something is seriously amiss with that motor, and the only thing that I know of that can bend a pushrod is a valve sticking. The intake is the hardest thing to pull (I used a cherry picker last time I took my intake off) and you've already done that. A little more wrenching gets the heads off and allows you to better assess their condition. Those valves are sticking despite what tapping them with a mallet tells you. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't quit now and put it back together as is.

I'm pretty sure you can pull the heads with the exhaust manifolds installed. Gonna be heavier but you'll save the aggravation of the bolts. Soak the top ones in PB blaster for a couple days and see if you can turn them a little. If so, more juice and some heat. I'll take time but they will come off without breaking. If they do break they're not terribly difficult for a machine shop to remove or drill straight through and use a nut to retain the bolt.

The most important thing is don't let the fear of broken manifold bolts prevent you from pulling the heads and fixing the base problem. That they move when cool does nothing to disprove the fact that they are getting tight enough in operation to bend the pushrods.

Oh yeah, if you pull the radiator and water pump off you can stand in front of the engine to pop the heads loose.

Did you see any small pieces of plastic on your heads when you removed the valve covers?
The old valve seals become brittle, and brake apart. I agree, pull the heads, save some heartache down the road.
