I haven't met anyone who's actually done a clark FE swap. The FT parts don't exactly fit an FE or a pickup. FT flywheels are external balance, FE's are internal (except 410/428). You cannot run a pickup clutch with the clark. Good luck finding a conventional cab clark 280VO 5 speed too. Not many were made and Ford didn't use many at all.

What gears does your truck have? What don't you like about it cruising at 65?

I read this thread thinking to myself the whole time that your barking up the wrong tree trying to fix a driveability at freeway speeds issue by switching transmissions. Do you have exhaust leaks? Do you have a clutch fan? are the bearings in your tranny shot or are there bad U-joints/bent drivelines/out of phase drivelines?

no need for your input average250. I already know your opinion on anything that is not originally built for an FE. thanks

Ares360 I forgot to mention that my tranny is a wide ratio 4spd. The difference in the wide and close is mainly first gear. Its by no means a granny gear, toploaders are made to run.The wides first gear is 2:78 and the close ratios is 2:32. I have a friend that has the close ratio and said he wished it was a wide ratio because you can take out easier from a stop. As far as the tranny you posted from the Mustang I think its the same. :hmm: As for the price I would shop around. I,ve bought two toploaders one for $100 and the other $250. Just ask around they,re out there. Another thing IMHO I would stay away from a T-10 4spd that Ford used in some cars they open up from the side instead of the top. They just dont take abuse well i,ve seen many of them busted.Hope this helps you out.Brian.

that does help out a LOT. Wide gears is what I am hoping for. ANd yes, I will definately keep looking, I just found that one in 5 mins, so I was stoked.

Yeah, I'm a real purist! Trying to save you some trouble, I just cannot follow the logic of how in the world a car 4 speed would be preffered to a granny 4 speed in an F-250.

You do know that an NP435 has a 3.09 second gear right? That's a bit lower than 1st gear in a wide ratio toploader. So you spend a good chunk of change on a toploader, go through the work of fitting it in the truck to gain a more difficult to start off in gear and you now have to shift one more time between start and cruise.

The rug trans is for a 6 cyl. it wouldn't hold up to an fe for long.

You may be able to re drill your FE flywheel to accept the larger parts, but i have never compared the two side by side to know for sure.

Ok, so what if you had the FE flywheel redrilled to fit the larger clutch parts? Does anybody know what size clutch a clark 5spd has, and if it's even possible that it would fit the FE flywheel? Is this uncharted territory?

I understand that. I don't like only 3 gears, simple as that. And if shifting gears was such a big deal then I wouldn't have a manual, But I don't cry about one or two gears for better performance. If there was a bolt up 5 speed, I would spend the money to have something I like. :fr: Have a Nice Day!

And again thanks for your input.

Should work in the place of a top loader. Been a while, but I tore one apart for a friend and we had to use the old mustang II bellhousing to put it in his fox mustang.
