Here's the latest on the bed work. I ran into a pretty serious issue with this bed. It has some prior collision damage from probably 20 years ago that I found as I started to blast off the red paint. So I started grinding out all the bondo with the flap disc, and damn! There's a lot of filler here! The thickest I found was probably 1/4", but the worst of it is what the filler was hiding. The metal underneath was solid, but was so wavy, I don't think it's savable. You could pound on it for days and probably still get to a point where you'd have to use considerable amounts of filler to make it flat again. :( And on top of that damage toward the front, the rear of this same panel (near the reflector) was super thin and had a lot of rust through.

So after the initial  , I started thinking of the best path forward. I decided to replace the lower bedside with a better one, separating it at the seam, and replacing the lower section only. This method would also allow me to clean the rust from, and properly seal the seam as it goes back together. I had a donor in mind, so I grabbed the plasma and headed back out to my parents farm and my collection of parts trucks. The green truck is a '69 that I bought on auction a couple years ago for $100. Yep, whole truck, $100. Now, I absolutely hated the idea of cutting up a bump, as I have a soft spot for these trucks as we all do. But, I just kept telling myself it was donating parts to a better cause, and with the passenger side of the green bed in bad shape anyway, it's really the only section of the bed that was usable for a "nice" truck. But still, it was hard to do.

I torched off the bed bolts from underneath and my Dad helped me shift the bed back for better access. Then the plasma cutter went to work.

Sorry to hear about the bed. It looked so promising to start with. Anxiously awaiting the outcome... :pop:

Don't feel too bad I had to sacrifice a bed side to fix my bed. The only downfall of these trucks are the seamed bedsides... :?

Was the green bed in bad shape? Why not use the whole bed?

Thanks for the comments, guys. And yeah, it's kind of a blow to the intended progress, but I've really learned to just put your head down and keep rolling. I'd be crazy if I expected everything to go smoothly, right? No big deal, it'll be very sound and solid metal when I'm ready to paint.

Yes, the floor, wells, and RH side were in pretty poor shape as I mentioned above. My brother was eyeing it for use as a trailer, but I guess I ruined that idea, wouldn't make a very good trailer now. :D

The good news: I got all the replacement support channels made for the new bed floor!

Okay, I know I'm not supposed to be working on the assembly, :D but I needed to make a little more room in the shop. So I finished welding the x-pipe, bent and installed the transmission cooling lines, and wrapped the exhaust pipe next to them for added heat protection. (I couldn't find my stainless straps, I'll replace the plastic ones when I do)

Then my brother helped me set the cab on the chassis! Holy crap, if that's not a kick in the pants for motivation!! :hd:

And then my wife and son came out to inspect my progress. Luckily, the work performed passed his very strict quality control standards.

Looking great, I just recently got my motor and trans installed in my truck. I was wondering what you used for your transmission lines? Did you buy a set of pre-bent stainless lines I've seen? Or did you go another route?

tylerb43 wrote:Done by the high 20's  :D Yeah, I guess you're right, page 11 is a small exaggeration, but at the rate I'm going, by page 25, you guys will be helping me with installing the windshield!

Speaking of milestones, a few day ago was the 1 year mark for my project. 11/20/2010 is when I pulled it out of my Dad's barn, where I had parked it so many years before. I thought I'd be much farther by now, but then again, looking at it that day - I had NO IDEA how much time and effort this thing needed to be awesome again. So I'm choosing to find the positive in the time (and money) spent and how far it's come.

Tyler....I had to come search for this post.....To help you see what a Fantastic job...in a short time(I know it doesn't seem like that)that you've accomplished

Oh and by the way....your on pg 23....almost time for the windshield :P
I've had enough and I'm not alone

Thanks man! I thought about buying some pre-bent lines, but ended up bending my own and routing them in dual butterflied clamps on the crossmember just below the PS motor perch. I'll get a picture of that for you if you're interested. I used AGS's Poly-Armour lines (http://www.agscompany.com/automotive/10) which I purchased at Napa. They are very easy to work with, and are much more corrosive resistant that the standard steel lines. Another good choice would be their NiCopp lines.

Thanks Randy!! I'm just struggling to stay ahead of you! And yeah, the little guy loves it in the shop, and now you guys know why things have slowed a little since the spring! (I'm sure many here can relate)

Thank you very much for the kind words! I know many don't take the time to comment, but thanks to those that do, it keeps me very motivated and wanting to show you guys the next update! I had the bed supports fabricated at a local steel yard. With lots of precise measurements, a good drawing, and some bad ass metal fab tools, they can build anything. (much better than I can)
