I just read the article on Mopar again... somthing I didn't mentioned was to only thin with mineral spirits... I've read a couple of other articles about painting with this process... the other articles really stressed to thin with mineral spirits only. Thining with acetone or other chemical agents will cause the paint to flash (dry to fast) and cause orange peeling.
I have every intention of painting all 3 of my bumps that way... starting with the bump trailer to work on my technique.

i've had far better luck spraying than i have with rolling. i've got part of a cab painted and after 3 reduced coats and a sand, it came out fairly shiny.

Serious question not trying to knock this but I am curious.

I can get single stage paint in just about any color from my local auto paint guy for $100 for a gallon, I can get hot rod flatz in pearl, metallic or regular colors for $150 to make 1.5 gallons, with either of these paints I can just do the body work (like I would have to do with the $50 paint job anyway) then just shoot it and basicly be done in a weekend. With the $50 paint job I would probably have a weeks worth of work into it due to having to sand between coats.

Do you guys feel that its worth saving the $50-$100 and do the work or spend the little bit more money and shoot the paint in a weekend? Do you think the single stage automotive paint would look much better than the $50 paint job or about the same?

The quality of a paint job is more determined by the prep-work that went in into it, than the quailty of the paint that goes on top... though a better quallity paint might give slightly better results.
When I was in the Air Force, I bought a '65 Mercury Comet Caliente. That was back in '77.
It was painted with Rustolium and a professional quality paint brush for enamels.
I promish you could not tell that it had been painted with a brush. It was as good or better than any Maaco paint job I've seen. Again, the prep work was done right so the quality followed through the end product.
Until the last few years, there was only 2 kinds of auto paint, enamal and laquer, so this painting style has been around for a long time. it just took someone to bring it back for it's popularity to come back.
It was used on farms, homes and has been used on nearly everything metal that can be painted.
When the Mopar thread came out a few years ago, Rustolium was runnin' $25-$30 per gallon, now it's around $35 per gal.. Most vehicles take about a gallon, add in a gallon of mineral spirits and your around $42-$45... everything else will run about the same as it would using any other type of paint.
Besides the higher cost of piant, there are other variables that need to be included when you are using different types of paint.
You have the cost of a compressor, spray guns, moisture traps, not to mention setting up or renting a paint booth... I don't even want to try and guess how much the cost has gone up and not even a drop of paint has touch the vehicle. Try painting it in yer driveway, like you can with Rustolium. I wonder how much over spray you can get on yer neighbors vehicles.. especially when you take into account that 1/3 rd of the paint you sprayed ended up in the air as over spray... the cost of the wasted over spray would fully pay for a gallon of Rustolium...
In the true spirit of a do it yerselfer, I'm gonna paint my bumps with enamal, a roller and a paint brush.

Keith, don't know if you've done anything as far as paint yet, but...I painted this boat trail with Rustolem. Bought the Royal Blue and Black. Just kept adding a little black to the blue until I got to the color I wanted which just about matched the boat perfect. Dam I wish I kept that boat.
