Ok, I have the stock 4 speed in my truck sitting behind an inline 6...

I am going to drop a 390 in the truck.. I am guessing the bellhousing wont work? I have a bellhousing form a 390/3 speed will that work?

What bellhousing would i need to find to get a T5 to bolt up to the 390?

Edit: I also found a guy with a T5 our of a 91 cobra mustang... asking $560 Canadian are the Cobra trannys stronger?

I could see it if you had an underpowered engine that needed the mechanical advantage to get a large load moving or something but just to drive it you either have to start in 2nd or start in 1st (about 3/4 of a second) and then quickly to 2nd. The lesser of two evils is to start in 2nd. Most trucks that have this set-up also suffer from the dreaded warped clutch plate vibration as well. What is a suitable wrecking yard replacement that would act more like a car 4 speed, you know, a sensible 1st gear for starting out in? Something that would bolt up to a 360. I don't need the truck trans., this truck will never be used for "real" work. Mostly to carry 5 trash cans to the landfill or the dog to the lake to fetch the drag. Other than that it will be a daily driver kind of truck.

Back in the 80's I put a close ratio toploader out of my Dad's 65 Galaxie 500 in my 70 F100, ran a 390 and later 410 Merc with it. Used the bell housing and all from the car. Just had to shorten the drive shaft and lengthen the speedo cable, change the (speedo) drive gear and move the cross member back. A nice, easy swap. I REALLY like it. It was my daily driver through high school and college, put over 200000 miles on it over the years. I've done quite a bit of towing with it too. Car trailers and such. Never had any problem with the high first gear of the close ratio when towing. I ran 3.50's in the rear most of the time. The FE's have enough torque even with a big cam to get it moving. It only dropped about 200 RPM's between gears, worked terrific for street racing. It is traction limited anyway, so a lower first gear would be a detriment. The shifter is farther to the rear and side compared with the T18, but it's not a problem. I really wish it had a .73 OD, if it did it would be perfect!

Here are a bunch of links that I have found for T-5 Info. You will need the same adaptor that I used. (Toploader to T-5)
