That book sounds great, my life is quickly spinning onward towards having way too many things to do. Building and designing a house, starting a new firm, moving my family ( wife and three kids under five) etc.

I believe your post has perfect timing....

It is my truck that still keeps me grounded, simple , functional and beautiful

Thanks , good to hear how you are doing as always

I know it's several years old now, but I just found this wonderful read... I'm so glad someone bumped it up to the top.
You put the love of these old trucks into words in a way that very few people can. I especially loved the poem about the wing window.
Thanks for taking the time to write all of this and let us share in your adventure!

Are you still driving and enjoying your bump?

I love old steel. New stuff is cool as long as nothing breaks on it, then open your wallet. I'm doing a frame off on my Dads 1973 Jeep J4000 and next will be my 1971F100. I drive a 2008 F250 diesel. I'm terrified something will break on it. I raise the hood and just scratch my head. I'll get rid of that thing as soon as my Jeep is finished, it will be my daily driver. I hate not being able to make my own repairs. Try replacing a blend value in a new vehicle vs. a lawn mower style cable on our old rigs.

Wow, great read! I'm a writer myself and just purchased a '67 F100 Custom Cab. These trucks hold deep sentimental value to me and it's great to see I'm not the only one that looks at them as not just an old truck, or a means of transportation, but as a connection to a 'you' that you may have forgot exists. Thank you for sharing your experiences!

Waiting for the last round of back surgery to heal and then back to having fun with the boy working on his truck. Small stuff...but little does he know the right of passage comes tomorrow night. I was younger when I received my first set of tools from dad and still have them (mostly, you know teenagers sockets get left laying everywhere)! With dad and both of my grandfathers gone I have everyone's tools. Enough to build him a decent set with a few new pieces thrown in. It is threads like this that show it is more than a vehicle, but a passion to work on vintage steel. It is our duty to pass that on to the next generation so they too learn the craft and serenity (is that really possible?) of vintage steel.

Vintage steel indeed. Been using the truck to do the Christmas shopping. It doesn't fit in parking spaces very well but so far the other drivers have been forgiving and just park around it leaving enough room for me to avoid their fenders when I leave. Truck's been running well and the turbo loves cooler weather. Really is a lot of fun to drive and like motorcycles, when it gets colder the old stuff hibernates. Was hoping to go on a firewood run today but it's raining. Oh well, enjoy the day.
