The shifter is a Mr. Gasket that was purchased from Advance Auto, here is the link.

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... ent=value4

I would say it is a good shifter, not great. The box comes with about 200 parts and the directions are less than helpful. Luckily we had a similar shifter on the truck previously so we followed the pictures that we had and it wasn't too bad. You won't need most of the parts in the box, I guess that is what you get with a universal assembly. The one problem we had was that there are two plates that are on the transmission with some holes and slots and the one in the kit didn't fit. We ended up using the ones that were on from the older shifter but these plates would have to be modified to fit if you are using this kit. We still have to figure out a bracket for the reverse light switch.

Great looking build! I was wondering if you have any tips on installing the tailgate with fresh paint? I will be installing mine in the near future and was looking for some tips that might have made it easier.

Thanks. Found your project thread and your truck looks very nice, I like the black.

For the tailgate the biggest tip is to have three people helping. We went with the polyurethane hinges from LMC which I was happy with during the install, hopefully they hold up well. Make sure you have all the hardware installed, supports on and bolt the one hinge in place. Then have one person hold the one side in place, away from the paint. The other two people can work on the other side, place the hinge in the tailgate and then put the gate in place. It has to sort of come from the top to clear everything. Then just keep holding while the second hinge is bolted on to the bed. Then just hook the supports on each side. There are side bumpers that bolt to the bed that help center the gate. I would use some painters tape on the edge of the bed and gate to help protect the paint, especially on the bottom. It all sounds simple but does take a little care.

These have definitely been the most nerve racking steps with the new paint but as I am sure you know taking your time is very important. My next hard one will be installing the polished grill.

Jeff,

Just want you to know that your "Father and Son" project build has inspired me and motivated me! I have a long bed 67 that I'm currently working on. Please check out my pics. I'll be posting them soon under the "project updates" category. I love your truck man!

I have been working on polishing the grill and finally got most of it finished. It had a few holes and a crack that I had welded up by our shop at work. It is not perfect, even after all the sanding and polishing but still looks pretty good I think. I installed new headlights after painting the buckets and then clear lens covers and amber bulbs for the turn signals. I am still working on the headlight covers, they were in worse shape and I might just end up buying them new.

Here is the spot that had the crack in it, welded up and after starting the polishing.

Thanks again everyone. Here are a few more pictures. I finished the polishing of the headlight covers, like the rest of the grill they aren't perfect but look pretty good for now. I also took apart the vent windows, painted the frame and reassembled with new seals and chrome handles.

Thanks Calvin. I got the clear park lens from LMC. It is a kit for $30 that includes the gaskets, clear lens and amber bulb.
