I know exactly where that is. Went through there on my way to La a couple of weeks ago. Nice country! Good roads!

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
I see you used Por-15 for your frame and rear end and etc. I was just wondering if you would suggest using this cause I'm at the point were I'm about to blast my frame and everything and still haven't chosen a paint yet. Also did you use the high gloss black or the more traditional semi-gloss?
Thanks, Cole

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
I really liked the POR-15 and would recommend it to anyone. A little pricey, $35/qt, but worth every cent. I sprayed mine and it sprays easy and covers really well. Dries to touch in about 20 mins, apply 2nd coat in a hour (if you want one) and top coat in 6-8 hrs. If you wait over 36 hrs before top coating they recommend scuffing with sand paper before applying top coat. I used the Eastwood High Gloss Chassis Black and am really pleased with it. Finish is rock hard and a nice, shiny gloss. It's also about $35/qt. On my frame I used 2 qts POR-15 (2 coats) and 1 qt Chassis Black (1 coat). I sprayed it with a $15 Harbor Freight gravity feed paint gun. The POR-15 is a real PITA to clean up after so make sure you were adequate protection or you can toss your clothes and it'll take 2 weeks or more for the overspray to wear off of your skin. Clean your painting equipment quickly 'cause if you let it dry even lacquer thinner won't cut it. The Chassis Black cleans up easily with paint thinner. Altogether I've used about 6 qts of POR-15 and 5 qts of Chassis black, so far, and have some left over. In hindsight, I probably would have went ahead and bought the gallons but I didn't have that much money to drop at once. Good luck!

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
I have a few more question about por-15. I am considering spraying mine too. How did you spray yours? Did you use thinner or anything and what kind of pressure did you spray with? Sorry for all the questions. haha

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
No problem. I bought a $15 Harbor Freight paint gun. Got this one on sale http://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-8-cf ... 67181.html. Thinned the POR-15 about 15% with generic lacquer thinner. I sprayed with about 40-50 psi pressure. Two light coats worked better than one heavy one. It's the first time I ever sprayed anything so I played with it on a piece of plywood first to get the hang of it. Good luck and let me know how it worked out for you!

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
Thanks David! Fortunately I've accumulated plenty of vacation time at work. I've scheduled 4 weeks this year just for this purpose. I'm scheduling 4 more weeks next year to work on it. It allows me to save up money in between and then go at it hard for a solid week. It's hard to accomplish anything with just a few hours free time a month. But if you can carve out a week at a time you can get a lot done. Even at that it's going to take at least another year and half, if I'm lucky.

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
yep i know what you mean about having the free time from work. i work 7 days a week right now since company approved overtime for my position and with the wife out of work that extra money helps keep us a float. i just took a week vacation from work so that i could catch up on homework for school but i am taking the last week of the year off and hope to get all the good sheet metal cut off the old cab to transplant onto the newer cab

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
Great Cole! Remember, about an hour between coats of POR-15 and 6-8 hours after POR-15 before topcoating, but no more than 36 hours or you'll have to scuff it before top coat. So don't start unless you can finish by the next day. Good luck!

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
Ok thanks agian. Was gonna brush it on but figured it might go a little farther if I sprayed it and not take quite as long either.

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild
Definitely spray it. I'd hate to try to brush all those nooks and crannys around the crossmembers. Have fun!
