Front axel identification
I went to get some new wheel cylinders for my 68 250 but the parts store needs to know which axel it has, I tried searching the forums but I can't find out how to tell which axel I have and I am not taking that damn thing apart only to find out they have to order the parts. My id plate dosn't seem to have a code for front axel, I have a dana 60 with 4:10's in the rear, but all I know about the front is that it has closed knuckels. Can someone help me. My id plate says "131 ME f260 b 81 A24 6800 179 4000 422496

Closed knuckle Dana 44, open carrier, 4:09 R&P. I believe the cylinders are the same between the HD (bigball) and the LD (small ball).
Do your selectors look like this? If so, you have a Heavy duty (bigball) Dana 44. If they are smaller then you have a Light duty (smallball) Dana 44.

re: Front axel identification
The easiest way to tell a big ball vs. small ball knuckle would be to count the number of bolts attaching the wiper seals. A small ball front will have 8 bolts total on the two plates and a big ball knuckle will have a total of 12 bolts on the two plates.
My tag reads A 24 K the K after 24 designates 3.5M or big ball front. From what I see in my book a 68 if equipt with a big ball front would use the same K code after the 24. If no code after 24 it may just be the standard small ball front?
Greg is also correct on the size of the lockout his photo shows a WARN type hub. Some could also have a DANA type also or even no lock out at all. I show either front having a 1 1/16 front cylinder but different part number cylinders are used between the small ball and large ball fronts
if they can cross a Ford number I show the following info:
Small ball front ( 3M OR 3.3M) C3OZ.2062.C r.h. and C3OZ.2061.C l.h.
Big ball front (3.5M) C6TZ.2062.A r.h. and C6TZ.2061.A l.h.
These are from the Ford catalog F250 4x4 front for 12 1/8 X 2 Brake shoe size
Attached photo will show a DANA style hub

re: Front axel identification
It only has 8 bolts so it must be the light duty axel. I think you are right about the code, if it dosn't have the extra letter it must be the light duty one. Looking at the hubs was little help, one is MM the other has the old Case IH emblem on it. Thanks for your help guys!

Is that who made my hubs? I couldn't find anything indecating who made them. I like'em, they look like D60 hubs. Some people ask "how I got that Dana 60 under it".
It does keep me on my toes. The allen bolts want to come loose every once and a while. I blame it on the LSD. Also, the selector knobs are week and they are getting extremly hard to find. It would be cool to get a couple turned out on a lathe.

re: Front axel identification
Look close at the symbols next to the numbers on the hubs. 1 Style is WARN and 1 Style is DANA

re: Front axel identification
AHH, very good. I am missing my 71 volume one manual, so I have never really looked to see what it was. I guess it wasn't a very big deal at the time.
