New Toy-Mig Welder

Post by Maxum96 »

I finally picked up a mig welder today. I got a Miller DVI MIG. I've been wanting a MIG for a long time. I was originally planning on buying a small Hobart MIG, but ended up going with the Miller. The nice thing about this welder is it comes with a quick change plug so you can run it off 110 or 220. It's kinda big to be called "portable", but I can take it to a buddy's house to weld something if need be even if he doesn't have a 220 outlet. I set up a dedicated 220 outlet in my garage for it. Just got done hooking everything up and made a couple of test welds. I haven't welded in over 20 years and have never used a MIG before. MIG's are so easy to use compared to ARC, TIG, or gas.

Nice rig. That'll be as handy as a pocket on a shirt.

Thanks for the comments. I got it at a local welding shop here in town. It set me back about $1150. More than I wanted to spend, but it's a nice machine, very versatile and the msrp is about $1350.

Nice. I was interested in miller also, after some comments on this forum. What do you guys think about the multi-process setups, such as the Miller Shopmate 300 DX. Are they as good as the DVI or just ok at mig welding. I also wanted to do tig as well, that's why i'm looking at these.

Added a new toy the other night to go with my new mig welder. Got a plama cutter from a co-worker that's getting divorced and trying to raise some cash. He bought it 1-2 years ago and never used it.

So if a guy can weld with a tig gas or arc, would you say he could also mig. espec. with practice?

Mig is probably the easiest to learn, I've been welding close to 30 yrs. Alum. and ss tig is what I do everyday, none of it's hard to do if you have good eqpt. Somebody who stick welds everyday thinks alum. is hard to weld, I think stick welding pipe is tricky , it's just getting acustomed to what your welding. Now I said mig is easiest to learn, esp on thicker stuff, now welding sheetmetal takes a bit more practice. just keep practicing. hope this helps.
