Ted's 70 4x4

Post by 460 crew »

Ok I have a friend by the name of Ted and He doesn't use a computer or own one and I'm not sure I will be able to break him of that habit but he owns a recently purchased 70 4x4 F250 that has sat for about 5 yrs at another friends house for 600 bucks.

I told him I'd do a progress report on the site for him to look at at my house from time to time and maybe get him involved enough he will join us.

So here goes a running 70 F250 highboy That is mostly stock except for a 390 4bbl that looks to be out of a car with a front sump and 4bbl aluminum ford intake. Some kind of headers too.
It has a closed knuckle D44 with stock armstrong steering except for an adjustable draglink, NP435 tranny,Dana spicer 24 case and D60 rear. We have concluded that he will be finding a donor cab asap as his has some nice rust issues being from Cali. He has already put a set of 35in Toyo M/T's on the set of rims I had for sale for a while and purchased a 600 edel carb off of me. A mallory unilite has already been added with a set of Summit 8mm wires along with a promaster coil.

His plans right now in the works...well on order is a NV4500 tranny conversion, an Aero rear fuel tank like mine, rebuilt 205 transfercase. Just ordered today is a set of edel aluminum heads(complete),harland rocker shaft and roller rockers, the edel performer intake with matching cam and timing set.

Any suggestions on this setup he has going will help , good or bad?

This is going to be his daily driver/trail rig

Plans later are PS,PB,A/C,and most of the restoration usuals.

Enough babbling here are a couple pics and more can be seen here..

I will be adding to this page and the photobucket account as he moves forward,He has jumped on the bandwagon and is pretty excited about the whole thing, his IRS return showed up just in time. :D

Thanks for lookin and I'll be sure to pass on all your remarks if not printing him a page here or there.

Kinda makes your mouth water when you see the potential in these projects!

I didn't know there were factory aluminum intakes for FEs, are they rare?

Great starter rig. I like the tires. Alot of people say they ride real nice.

Get rid of the grille.

Yeah the grill is some homegrown really tastefull pieces
ON the wheels I almost had to shoot myself in the foot for giving those rims to him but they look great on there and I could always get another set later on, but then who wants to match.

Rebel, yeah the factory aluminum intakes are a little more scarce than the cast iron boat anchor brothers  From what I'm gathering the intakes were on 428,427's, and some 390's in preformance applications.

Ok been a while since I updated this for him. Since last post he has stripped the frame of everything but axles. Collected a bunch of parts!!
He has decided the cab was not in good enough shape due to rust and bought a donor truck.
I had a HP D60 front axle for him but it needs some work, he scrapped the 390 he had for a custom 460Hp FE built by a local shop that specializes in FE's. I'll post pics and if anyone has ?'s about anything just shoot for specifics. He has decided on a NV4500, purchased a rebuilt divorced 205, Aero 32 Gal rear mount fuel tank, Auto fab Fe engine mounts(first ones they have made for a 4x4 FE), Blackbirds rear disk brakes with e-brake, power-Loc for the rear diff for now. I'm sure there is more but I'll post up again.

Right now he is in the process of deciding on what paint for the frame, he used some equipment sealer and some epoxy stuff but results have not gone well so he is debating a powdercoat job, we found a connection with a guy down the street that well cut us a deal.

here are some pics enjoy.

You said this is to be a daily driver/TRAIL RIG .... If that is still the plan, change the manifold to a dual plane, and watch your cam profile... you are looking at high end performance with what I see, and it is not going to be a good trail engine... there you want the grunt LOW... even with the T case and low gears....

That's a good point on that intake. Even the big dual planes like the performer RPM hurt low end a lot.

I like those new FE frame mounts. It's cool to see places are finally making cool parts for the highboys!

Guys I'm on your side with this one and the machine shop guy that set all this up convinced my buddy that this is what he would be happy with for all around power. There is nothing original about that engine now he spent over 7k on internal crap and the shop is bragging that this is a one of a kind.LOL He is also looking at using it to pull a small trailer around a couple of states so they figured out where the power band should be. We'll just have to wait and see how it does. I had him purchase a preformer in the begining and he ended up selling that to my pops cuz the guy said it wouldn't flow the #'s he was going to put into it.

I myself am sketchy about what the builder has said as he builds FE's for race cars all the time, not trucks. So go figure.

Yeah Dustin it's nice to see them make stuff but sucks that you have to push to get it, the market is out there you just have to find it and make the right parts and at a decent price.
