Rats nest....
Have been trying to clean up the wiring nightmare under the dash of the '70. Must of had 10 radios in here, I have enough speaker wire under the dash to reach from my shop to the house, all different sizes and colors. All the lights, turn sigs, brakes, tail, head, parking, work... When I have the turn signals on the brake lights won't work, turn off turn sigs and brake lights work...?????... I have removed about 5 rolls of electrical tape from all the splices and cleaned up what I know goes where. The PO(s) cut into the turn signal wires coming from the steering column, spliced into them and I think that's where the trouble begins....???.... I have the wiring diagrams in the front seat with me but it's starting to turn to mud.
HELP.................
Toss out all the ideas you have and I'll give it another go.
Thanks
Craig

re: Rats nest....
My advice would be to mark and unplug everything. Then remove the entire harness.
Its not that hard. These harnesses arent as complicated as you might think. Removing one doesnt take much more than removing the radio, ashtray, guage panel, un-screwing the fuse panel and then some careful pulling/poking/tugging to get it out of the cab.
Once out, lay it on a bench or piece of plywood and start properly repairing all spices and leaving off any non-OE wiring.
Putting it back in is just the reverse of removing it.
Nothing is worse than trying to fix or figure out a screwed-up wiring harness while its still under the dash. Especially when wires change colors thanks to a PO hack job.
When its on a bench and you can start at one end of it and follow it all the way to the other, it becomes easy.

i don't know get all the speaker wire stuff out get rid of the non factory stuff. then start matching colors the best you can. your light problems are probably in the turn signal wiring like you said. i know doing a project like that is a big pain. i tried it after the po had rewired around the whole steering column. everything but the blinkers worked but i couldn't figure out what he had done so i put a used harness in it. instead of trying to figure out his wierd wiring mess.

Okay what happens to the brake lights if you are on the brake and hit the turn signal. Does both sides go out or just one?
The brake lights signal goes up into the turn signal and for the side that is flashing it gets cutoff and the flashing takes it's place. The other side is still connected hot through the switch and down the turn and brake wire for that side.

Kid,
If I'm on the brakes and turn on the turn sigs, it's brake lights out......I've looked for the turn sig switch diagram but haven't found it yet. Can you or anyone lead a blind ol' man to it...???

I'm with Sharkdance only go a step further: Obtain a used wiring harness from the junkyard like Fordman. It is not hard to find one (where I live anyway)

Why would someone splice into the turn signal harness?

re: Rats nest....
Thanks to all for the tips and help. I'll be getting back under the dash in the morning and see if I can clean this up without going the new harness route. I'm going to make my own custom gauge cluster so that will free up some of the mess, I hope.
Watch this thread for the continuing saga "oltrukr takes a hack at it".
Thanks guys,
Craig

re: Rats nest....
Went under the dash again yesterday, found a couple more trouble spots, fixed those. Still have the brake light trouble but may have it narrowed down to the turn sig switch. Took the truck for a short run and the turn sig cam seems to be broken, won't cancel. I'll pull the steering wheel later today and see what needs to be fixed in there.
I'm going under the front end this morning but that will be another story.
