And yet another C-6 question.

Post by tonsoffun1974 »

Well, Ive looked through the back posts, and cant find the same exact problem as mine ( maybe Im to hopeful ). When I get in the truck in the morning, my forward gears dont engade right away. I have reverse, and its strong, but it takes up to a minute for the forward ones to grab. After they grab, it goes like theres no problems, no slipping, strong shifts. Ican set at work all day, only start it and go to lunch, and it engages fine. The pump seems to be fine once I get it to move. Its like the pump is losing prime. is there a simple fix, or should I just start looking for a rebuilt tranny? Ive replaced the screen. and mod. valve, so I know those are not the problem. I'd rather not waste the time and money if I dont need to replace the tranny.

It's called "morning sickness"

The rubber seals have shrunk up and when it gets cold they leak. The
ones inside the trans that make the clutches and bands work.

It's tired. Gonna have to overhaul it before too long. A can of trans
fixall they sell at the parts store might help for the time being.

Good luck,KeithP 8)

I figured I woulndn't get lucky enough for it to be some simple adjustment. I always ask, when I first started workint on things if it didnt work right you had to replace it. My brother would then fix it, and start using it. Its always something stupid that Ive overlooked too. Thanks for a quick response.

The fact its only forward gears is a bit bothersome...

I would check the adjustment on the linkage, and possibly change the fluid and filter before I threw in the towel completely...

(Edit: I see you say you changed the screen already, any change at all after that?)

Reverse is boosted to 350psi. It works no matter what. :)

No change with the fluid or filter change. Is it feasible to replace the seals with the tranny in the truck, or is it one of those better left to the pro's things. I keep seeing adds for rebuilt C-6s installed for 500.00, with the 85.00/hour labor rates out here I'm thinking of finding out what the gimmik is with the rebuilt one. thats the crappy thing about apartments, you cant just drop the tranny in the driveway. I already do more than I'm supposed to out there.

It isn't difficult to do, but the transmission is going to have to come out to put a "soft kit" in it which is what you would need.

Here is the list from the repair manual:

No/delayed forward engagement (reverse O.K.)

1 Improper fluid level
2 Manual linkage misadjusted/damaged
3 Low main control pressure (leakage forward clutch stator seals)
4 Forward clutch assembly burnt/damaged/leaking
5 Valve body bolts too loose/tight
6 Valve body dirty sticking
7 Filter plugged
8 Pump damaged/leaking

Does it help if you slightly raise the idle RPM?
