Rebuild issues

Post by Supermike »

( Original topic: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 0&start=15 )

I was driving the truck around this weekend some, and I think I'm going to have to take it back to the shop that just rebuilt the transmission. I have a few issues... any advice is appreciated:

1) When I put it in reverse, or when on the brake (but in drive), the transmission makes a "rattling" noise. Not sure how else to describe it. It stops when moving or when in park.

2) Decided to burn some gas and give it some lead yesterday on a nice straight road. Starting around 25mph I floored it (well, not all the way). The engine revved and then the trans just SLAMMED like it was just catching up.

3) The truck shifts into 2nd between 10-20mph. If you are building speed, it will shift fairly smooth. If you are staying around 25-30, you get more of a double-clutch (kick-kick).

4) I don't feel like I have a 3rd gear. Should I?? After it shifts into 2nd, I can go faster up to at least 60mph, but if I let off the gas the truck immediately slows down like it was pushing the gear. Shouldn't there be a 3rd gear?!

FYI, the trans is a 67 3spd "Cruise-o-Matic". I believe it's an MX.

I know squat about trannies (well..except that they're heavy and full of voodoo) but, if you haven't already checked fluid levels and vacuum supply can influence the way they work. That's all I got - sorry.

*shrug* Now-a-days who knows. I'd call the shop and ask them exactly what was replaced.

I would assume it would be replaced... but you never know.

This might be a bad mount. When it's under load it will tweak the engine/trans and maybe exhaust against the x member or somthing. Have a friend do that and lay under her to see if you find the noise. Use a good friend. :D

2) Decided to burn some gas and give it some lead yesterday on a nice straight road. Starting around 25mph I floored it (well, not all the way). The engine revved and then the trans just SLAMMED like it was just catching up.

This is BAD. The c4 has two bands unlike the c6 witch has only one. Sounds like one is out of adjustment. Easy to fix but don't do that anymore or you will be looking for a new planetary gear set.

3 and 4 sound like a valvebody/shift kit gone bad. Could also need linkage adjustment. The bad thing about these old fords is all the solid linkage instead of cables. If you have a bad motor or trans mount and you smash the gas the engine will roll around under the hood. That can cause you linkage to bind and in some cases shift for you. Not a good thing. I had one so bad once i floored it at a stop light and the motor mount gave way. Dropped it into reverse for me. Scary ride for sure and I cant imagen what the guy behind me thought. :D

FYI, the trans is a 67 3spd "Cruise-o-Matic". I believe it's an MX.
FMX or C4 is my guess. depends on the motor. An FMX has a cast iron main case and tubes on the outside of the case. C4 is about the same size and has no tubes. Most of the time a square pan and the fill tube screws into the side of the pan. C6 is a bigger unit and most of the time the bellhousing will not come off. The made some that did for small blocks but they didn't show up untill the mid 70s i think.

Hope this helps.

Thanks folks... I have a 12k/12mo warranty on it, so I'm going to take it back in. Just frustrating, and wanted to try and get an idea of what the problem might be so they don't try to blow smoke up my posterior.

Did it do this before the rebuild? If not, don't pay another dime. If they broke something then they should fix it.

I know you know that, just thought it should be said.

:2cents: Poor job all around. For 850 on a trans that old it should be full of new parts. I do them for 650 with converter.

45 minutes west of Indy. I would have time but it wont be for a couple of weeks. I have 3 sitting on the floor now. I promise you can buy a chiltons trans book and rebuild it yourself. You don't need any special tools. Plus you can air check them to make sure your seals are good before you ever put it in. It is a great trans to work on. You can get a full and I mean full rebuild kit for 150. A converter for about 100. Save yourself a bunch of cash. Thats why i learned to do it.

Supermike probably has an MX, the FMX wasn't born yet.

Have to hand it to ya RTG_Racing, I've gone thru a C4 & C6 with no problem but got intimidated by the FMX. Even the trans guys get it wrong sometimes and I think that's what happened to Supermike.

That's not bad... I have family that lives in Carmel.

That said, I'm going to have to take it back in and let them look at it. I'm pretty sure it's an MX, because they had C4 and C6 parts on hand but said they had to look for parts for mine. And as noted, the FMX wasn't born until 68, I believe.

Plus, I've already paid them $850 and do have a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty. So I may as well make them mess with it some more. I just hope they don't jack it up in the process.

One thing I've learned about the '67 -- a lot of folks think they're the same as the 68-72's, but they aren't. They are a beast of their own in a lot of ways.

Well, after one complete month without my truck, I thought I'd give a little update on this... (which I last did on this thread, which I kind of temporarily hijacked from cathynkeith). lol

Anyhow, took it back in on the 4th of June. They told me on the 8th I could come get it. But when I called they said it was still doing it and were going to have to rebuild the governor (I'm not that familiar with trans talk). I then called them on the 14th, and they said it would be ready by noon. But when I called to make sure before I drove over, they said it was still doing it and they may have to go all the way back through it!

The problem, apparently, was that they would get it together and it would shift fine at first, but when it cooled down the governor would start sticking. The truck would then basically skip 2nd and double-shift from 1st to 3rd. This happened every time they've taken it out and put it back together.

I finally took my newly aquired shop manual in to their shop on the 19th to see if it would help them. They told me they were trying, and had found an original repair manual on these. They also said they had contacted "an old guy who built these forever" and he confirmed some kind of helper spring you could put in the governor. They showed it to me in the book. He sent them one and were going to try it out. I think they also replaced the modulator valve.

That didn't work. Last Friday I called back and they said they were going to go back through it again, and that it needed a new thruster (?) and they were having one made because they could not find one. Apparently they were having it custom machined. This was at no additional charge to me.

I've been very patient and just allowed them to take their time. They've kept the truck inside and have been pretty up front with me. They FINALLY called me around 1pm today to tell me it was ready and I could come pick it up! I picked it up tonight and... the truck shifts smoother than my 2003 Honda van! Man... it feels like a brand new tranny! I guess it was the thruster, although I couldn't tell you what one looks like. Hopefully it stays this way, though! It is nice and tight when selecting gears (P/R/N/D/2/1), and up and downshifts like butter.

I give this place credit for making it right... never cost me a dime over my original $850.

 :drive:

That great Mike glad to hear that you got lucky with some stand up guys. I just started reading this thread this evening and I could just see it ending in some redneck court case, ending with them throwing up their hands and telling the judge " honest uncle "george we tried fixin it". I heard horror stories, especially when it is kept over a legnthty amount of time.

Thanks... I was getting REALLY worried about a week or so ago (around the time I took the manual in). I'm glad they backed up their work, too. I was worried I was going to be returned my truck, $850, and a tranny in a cardboard box. lol
