Odd Clutch Questions

Post by FoMoCo »

Hey all, I replaced my clutch on the 67 f-100 w/300 about 2 years ago. It has since been grabby, rough, heavy, just garbage. The flywheel was resurfaced and a new rind added. The clutch is a Borg Warner diaphram. This engine has an odd vibration wich is the biggest problem About a month ago I replaced the clutch on my 69 w/360. I replaced it with a Sach's 3 finger unit and same fly wheel treatment.
The 67 clutch is garbage, the 69 is super easly and smooth. The 69 has the original linkages and the 67 has all new parts.
The 67 has a 1992 (300) engine with the 67 flywheel. I still have the 92 flywheel. Could the 67 flywheel on th 92 engine cause the vibration? Is the Borg warner cluth just that junky?

Not sure but i think they changed the balacne method somewhere in the early 80s so you enging could be out of balance. Would cause a nasty vibration.

ARGH! I have gone off the deep end over this engine vibration for years now. I have tryed timing and going over the balancer a million times. I just happend to keep the old fly wheel to have an anvil.

The 300s all have internal balance. Some of the 65-69 flywheels only have a bolt pattern for a 3 arm pressure plate and a diapram unit wont bolt up. Was your flywheel redrilled for a newer diaphram pressure plate? If it was and it wasn't perfect, thats your vibration.

That's what I was leaning towards. The engine is a 92 block, internals, and a 240 head and flywheel. I bought a 92 clutch wich happend to be a diaphram style. When I replaced the clutch on my 69 w/360 I bouht the 3 finger type and there is no comparison in the ease and smoothness of the 3 finger. I guess I should get the 92 clutch surfaced and a 3 finger.

A good working, properly mounted Diaphragm clutch will be twice as smooth as a Long style clutch any day of the week, including ease of pedal travel. It's inherent in the design of the Diaphragm style clutch.
