chop top has begun for "el diablo" update11-7-14

Post by marz68 »

I got some pictures of what I have done so far to get my truck ready for the chop. It was very easy to remove the front glass just because the seal was dry, all I did was sit in the drivers seat and pushed with my food on the upper left corner of the wind shield and it started popping out.
The back was a little harder cause I had just replaced the seal with a new one but the process was the same, I also added some bracing on the cab to keep it all in place for when the top gets removed. I used a special drill bit that cuts out spot weld with out having to make holes in the sheet metal, this helps save time trying to weld the holes back up when it's all done. I will post more pics as I go. Stay tuned. 8)

I guess all of my questions will be answered about the top chopping thing. What will you do about the front glass, vent windows and a pilar not lining up after the chop?

I have another question. Why does that truck of yours not rust? Magic steel?

The door will be gutted to make room for the one piece glass so the door hinges will have to be modifyed so stay tuned for picks on that, the front glass will be cut or shaved down to size.
The pilars will be leaned back ass well as the glass, I was going to quarter the roof but that would make the cab look more boxy.

So can you still use vents if you do this? Where do you find one piece glass? What does quater the roof mean? Sorry for the questions but I might want to try this. Spent to much time staring at my roof this weekend.

cool. you can have a glass cut for the doors at a shop. you just have to make a template. i made one out of aluminum. as for the top hinge you can mill it down. the window track is a little harder to get in because of the room.

I won't be able to keep my vent once it's chopped.
The door glass will have to be custom made and it will be taken care of by some one else.
Quarter the roof means the roof gets cut into 4 pieces at the top and gets pulled apart as much forward and side to side as needed to make it all fit in place, you will need to add 1" strips of sheet metal or bigger as filler to make up for how much you pulled the 4 pieces apart. If you quarter the roof you won't have to lean the glass back.

This is what I have planned to do with the door hinges. The drawing came out a bit small but here it is.

Yep, that's how mine was done. Here's a view of the inside roof panel, where you can see how the top half of the cab was quartered and then filled in.

Take LOTS of notes and pictures while you chop yours...and definitely share them with us! I can't wait to see how you do yours....and especially how you deal with the door glass and upper hinge.

I will be making slots instead of just holes for some adjustability.
I have also thought about using newer truck hinges. :?

Sounds like a well thought out plan marz. The drawings look excellent on the plan for the hinge mosifications . You sure you ain't done this before.
