Engine Rebuilt-now tranny trouble!

Post by lrjetmech »

Got the engine back together-running great. Attempted to drive the truck over to the new house and got about 3 miles-won't pull at all, like it's in neutral in every position. Let it cool down for a bit, will do the same-spinning like it's in neutral after it gets hot. Hadn't had any problems with the tranny prior to the partial rebuild, but I do now. Any ideas of where to start? Figure I will change the fluid and filter, and modulator valve just to see, but don't have high hopes for that. Help!!!!!!!!!! Is a rebuild in my future, and can I reasonably do it? Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I am guessing it's automatic? I don't know much about tranny's but the pan tells a lot by things that are in it haha.

Is the vacuum hose to the modulator valve connected correctly?

Did you remove the engine in your partial rebuild? TQ seated correctly?
Fluid level? Correct type?
No other engine vac leaks? You did say that it was running good though.

Not sure if this is good form but here's a link to a guy who specializes in all ford trannys. If it continues to stump you sign in and see what he's got to say.

Hooked up at the manifold "T" fitting same as before. It's an Edelbrock manifold now, don't think that should make a difference, though.

Everything removed down to the block, but block not removed. TQ? Fluid good, same as it came with, added half a quart the first time is stopped pulling. No vac leaks, full 20 on vac gauge, running perfectly at 600 rpm, even in gear. Maybe just decided to give up now!!!!!!!!! :x

When you put the new manifold on did you hook the kick down linkage back up and adjusted ok?
I would drop the pan and check the filter, I have seen where the fluid gets some stuff in it that blocks it off partially and it will do the symptoms you have...
Shayne
I'm not "Brand Loyal" Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Toyota I have them all, one even cross mixed...
If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

Truck never had one before, so figure that isn't it. Definitely gonna drop the pan and change the filter and modulator, though, as that is the easiest thing to do at this point. Don't know exactly how long it sat before I got it, so the fluid could be weak, and no telling about the filter.

What years and models of cars or trucks could I possibly get a tranny out of for now? Thought I could just hit the junkyards and pull one for now and build/have mine built. At least I could get some use out of it for now, or maybe get lucky and find a good one, though my luck doesn't generally run that way!!!!!!!!!! :x

Update: Dropped the pan; finally found the right modulator valve (mine was a push-in type) and changed it; drained the torque converter; changed the screen/filter; put in Lucas transmission conditioner and new transmission fluid and now it appears to be ok!!!!!!!!! :D Drove it about 20 miles Wednesday and so far, so good. Gonna drive it some more this weekend, but all's well that ends well so far!!!!!!! :D

Those C6 filters are a joke, it's just a dang screen. Only thing it's going to keep out is nuts and bolts and if those are in your pan you're not going far. When I changed mine and saw the replacement was the same I realized there's no need to ever change the things, just change the fluid. If you really wanted to filter the fluid you'd want to install an inline filter. I have a couple around here, but never got around to installing one.
An FYI, the band in the C6 is externally adjustable and easy to do.
Lucas is good stuff, congrats on getting it fixed.

Where do you adjust it, and how/what are you adjusting, exactly? Thanks in advance. :D
