Just getting started on my 71 custom.

Post by Georgia71 »

Hi All,

Yesterday I finally decided to get started on my 71 pickup. I removed the bed, and front grill assembly. That's about it. I have some pictures I will put up later today if I have time. I was looking for advice on removing the front clip. Then I'll remove the engine. Is it best to remove the engine with transmission or not?

Hello Ryan,

I'm planning on removing everything and starting over from frame up. Sounds like a big task but the truck is getting some rust in it. I want to get started before it gets worse. I never took a truck apart and restored it before. So I guess I'll learn as I go. I took apart a garden tractor about 5 yrs. ago. I finally got it running this summer. I'm a slow worker. The problem is I lose interest for a while then go back to it later. My brotherinlaw is helping me. He worked for ford on the assembly line many years. So he knows a little about how cars are put together. I'm not going to build a show truck. I plan on using this truck after finished. I would like to add power steering, and auto trans. I currently have a new process 435 in it. I might be pulling a trailer from time to time so maybe I'll keep it . I'll try to post some pictures now. Wish me luck. Lots of it!

Ryan,

I haven't thought about that much yet. I don't want to think about how much money I'm going to spend on this project. Hopefully I won't need too much. But I'm sure it will be more than I plan on spending. It will probably snowball. I'm in no hurry to finish this because I'm having to save money for it. I will probably just clean the motor and paint it for now to save a little. Would like to have engine rebuilt to 390. Currently a 360 stock engine.
