You know those police interceptor crown vics have a lotta attitude (I want my bump to have that same sort of attitude). I wish I could buy one from the factory. but alas, I've got to settle for secondhand, beaten up PIs. . I was just curious if anyone else had an opinion about buying one of these fleet cars the government auctions off. The only thing that makes me hesitant is the high milege, long idleing, and those SOHC engines don't have much room for modifying.
Does anyone here own one? what are your thoughts?

Yup, I love me some CVPI. You can find a good deal on one if you look hard enough and know what you're seeing. Look at the brake petal. If it has a lot of wear then it's been doing some serious stop and go driving. Look at the wiring, if it looks butchered, find another one. The front suspension takes a lot of abuse, see if the ball joints have been replaced, if they haven't plan on doing so. The engine and tranny should sound stout.
I just sold my 02 car, it had 224,000 miles on it and it ran with the new ones at work and looked just as good. Go to www.crownvic.net for some more info, good folks( like me ) over there.

We have a guy here that buys/sell alot of them, sometimes he get them with low miles in good shape, supervisor, detective or k-9 cars. Had a friend that got a black with blacked out windows with only 45k miles in almost perfect condition do not know what he paid put it is a nice car, has none of the wiring or holes from the lap tops but does have the vynal back seat.

Smokeybear, are you an officer?
I kind of want to get one to use as a driver. I've got a taurus now, which is as dependable as any and to replace it with a vehicle which is assumed to be abused, is tough. I've been looking for a decent charcoal colored one and haven't found one with low enough miles. 2003 with 107K for 6,000. Little steep I think.

That might be a bit pricey. Check out crownvic.net, it is the fordification of the CV world. I can't remember the figures on the idling now,I want to say it is something like 1hr idle=30miles driven. Usually the 100K mile cars are running close to 175Kmiles when you take into account the idling. Remember even thought they are higher mileage and used as a police car, they were strictly maintained. Usually the shops have a cut off on mileage no matter the condition of the car, which is usually in the 100-120K mile range.

we've got this place locally. http://www.government-fleet-sales.com/Home.aspx
i think that i want one. . the trick for me is finding one that is reasonably priced and doesn't have any body moudling damage. seems like all the front and rear bumper covers are usually pretty crappy on the older models.
although i'm really liking this one. no holes and power everything in a good color with the push bar.

Saw a Trooper in El Paso that was in a Mustang GT. Was 2004 body style. I'd like to have it, if just for a little while

Hey Import, you can dump as much money and mods and more into those 4.6Ls as you can any FE or windsor. Fun motor to wind right up on the 5800 red line too.

amen, sounds like I've got my next ride picked out. I'm gonna have to burn up the tranny in my taurus so I have an excuse to get one. .
You know the government auctions aren't open to the public around here, only dealers with passes get in. boo that, so when I goto buy one I've gotta pay the man, and the dealer.
I'm loving sll the input. Thnks guys.

If you want one... try to get an ex state patrol car... they are maintained to a T and are 99% highway miles.
