Distibutor keeps sliping

Post by Helldiver »

I've got a stock distibutor, and every time I get on the gas hard the timing will slip, I tighened it down good but it contiues to slip at WOT. I don't want to over tighten it and strip the alunimum intake.

Is there an easy fix for this or do I need a replacement?

By the way, what are the tq specs for the distibutor hold down?
I can take it apart, but getting it back together is another story!

Hit the yards and find another hold down clamp. Or grind or hacksaw small groves on the surface of the clamp that is against the disty.

Actually, what I would do is to use a stud and nut instead of a bolt. You can torque the nut down quite a bit more than a bolt and not worry about stripping out the aluminum.

Thats sort of unusual...I've never had one do that
if the clamp was tight...But then again, I'm not WOT too
often... :hmm:
Are you sure the housing itself is actually slipping?
Could be a broke shear pin on the gear/shaft.
In that case, the housing would stay put, but the timing
would creep off. Then you reset it with a new position,
and over, and over again..
Before too long, you are out of turning room, and need
to restab it...... I had that happen on my 300 about
three years ago. Got a new pin at autozone, and off I went..

I shure hope it's not a broken shear pin, I havent noticed that it moved any further clockwise, I tried the stud solution sugested by Kieth and that seems to have worked. I used a carb stud that was left over from when I added a two inch spacer.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, I knew there had to be something simple I was overlooking :D

Come to think about it, before the manifold was installed I should have heli-coiled the bolt holes for the distibutor, thermostat housing, and mabe even the carb. Oh well live and learn, and get as much information as possible from the people on this site before hand.

It sounds to me like your bottom dizzy bushing is worn, and when you jump on it, the shaft bites into the housing, and gives it a twist. The way to see if this is the prob is to pull the dizzy, and see if there is any side to side play in the shaft.
