wood floor conversion in a 68 swb fleetside

Post by tybob81 »

Here are a few pics of the wood floor conversion for my 68. We first started of by drilling out all of the spot welds that held in the factory steel coragated floor section. We then sectioned the front of the bed crossmember and lowered it so the new floor will be flush with te rest of the floor.

We bent up custom side rails to slide the end boards into. Welded them into place.

We also made new center and a new rear crossmember because the old ones were to tall in height.

I am in the process of staining and finishing the wood boards. I used a bed wood kit for a 67-72 stepside f100 swb and cut them to fit in the opening. The overall width of the board was a bit to wide so the boards edges were all plained till the all fit with proper space and room for expansion. I ordered custom billet bed strips from obsolete and classic auto parts. The strips are the hidden fastener style and were made to the lenght I gave them. I will post more pics when I take them. I thought this would be a great mod to do and make everyone scratch there heads and wonder if a wood floor was an option on a bumpside fleetside bed. Let me know what you think.

I have to give a lot of credit to my father because without him this mod would still be an idea on paper.

Man that is going to look nice. I wanted to do this to but not now that I see what is involved. Now if you and your dad want to do another bed just let me know.

Cool project and looks like you are off to a great start. I've been wanting to see some examples of how people tackle that conversion and have only seen a couple pictures before of the finished product. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing it completed.

They make wood kits for both lwb and swb step side trucks. So if you were going to do the swap on a lwb you just order the kit for a step side lwb.

I will post the finish pics of the conversion when I get them. I have been busy and all I have to do is wet sand the inside of the bed one more time and shoot it. I also still have to stain the boards.
