From what i understand, the frame rails were wider on those trucks unless its a highboy. That said, you can drop the fronts and put em on ours if done as an entire assembly. This is common practice for converting to disc brakes.
Ive always thought a 9" was a 9" was a 9"... but i no expert by any means. I would venture a guess that it should swap over... but without someone having done this and saying yes.. the only way to know is to try it and see.

You can grind the welds on the spring pads and shock mounts, move them inward to compensate for the difference in frame widths and reweld them.I have a 79 F150 rear waiting to be installed under my 72. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

It would be a good swap since it would move your rear tires out to the same, or closer, width of your front wheels making it look better. I'd plan on doing this to my truck some day.
