Tranny swap??

Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to pull the engine out of my '68 CS to drill out some busted exhaust bolts and do some other work.
I want to swap trannies while I'm doing this.
I have a rebuilt NP435 to replace my wore out one...
My question: Which way is the best (easiest) way to go about this?
Pull engine and tranny as a unit?
Drop the tranny then pull engine?
Pull engine then drop tranny?

I'll thank you in advance...

That's what I was thinkin...
but a friend told me it would be easier to drop the tranny first and get it out of the way before pulling the engine.
That way you don't have to mess with tranny with the engine on the hoist.
But I have also heard that pulling the engine first does the same thing.
That's why I posted the question...

I would also pull them together. Not laying on the ground fighting with the tranny. Thats what I do.

When I did it I pulled them together, but I first removed the front clip. Way easier that way.

I never had much luck pulling them together but it might have been the engine lift. That is an aweful lot of weight to swing over the core support. It doesn't take all that long to pull the whole front clip. The core support bolts are usually rusted up but otherwise it's a cinch.

I don't think it's possible to pull a 4 speed with the engine. The shift tower won't clear anything and you can't drop the tranny down with the crossmember under the bellhousing.

Pull the engine then drop the tranny.

I just did the same thing on my f350. You can pull them both as a unit, but I had to remove the top cover from the tranny to get it out. I pulled it all out over the top without much problem & without using a load leveler, but on the way back in I will be using a load leveler for sure.

Pulling the top cover is asking to get dirt in the tranny.

When I / we pulled the 390/c-6 combo out of the '71 CS I parted out, it was no problem...
With two of us working...
We removed the hood /pulled the radiator / disconnected the wiring harness / disconnected the drive line / removed the mounts / attached the load leveler / hooked up the hoist and had the combo out and in the back of my '68 CS in about half an hour tops.

I know with the 4-speed you have to remove the shifter, but ya gotta do that anyway to drop it.
If I gotta pull the top off the tranny to pull it in one piece, I'd just as soon drop the tranny separate.
I bought a tranny jack a while back just to do the tranny swap, before I even decided to pull the engine.

Granted, most of my engine pulling experience is with bump 4x4's, I know it's not possible to pull a 435 in one piece with the engine. It's so easy to unbolt the bellhousing and make life simple verses fighting the two together the whole way out I don't see the point unless you were junking the truck and didn't care about screwing up the truck.
