69 twotones Ranger project

Post by 69twotone »

Well guys I am excited I am finally getting to post my own project thread. This last weekend my wife and I journeyed down to Keystone Iowa to pick up a 68 cab from forum member Snake. The trip took just shy of 11 hours and I made it there and back in my 69. The gas mileage was not the greatest and between the trailer and gas spent close to 240.00 to get there back. The 69 ran great though and did not give me any problems. It barely burned any oil. The cab is in my garage now and ready to start prepping for paint. I have to pull some dents out and take a wire brush to some of the areas with surface rust. Which I will be starting on in about a week. I am having a bed delivered next week off of a 67 and will post pics of it then.

I will post these as links for now sorry, I tired to get them to post as pictures with the img command but maybe photobucket does not allow hotlinking.

Well it ahs been a couple of weeks and I have been quite busy pulling dents out of the cab and the bed. I am pretty satisfied so far for my first attempt at body work

This is the first dent I tried to pull out with a stud hammer after practicing on a junk panel.
Image.

Still dont think I practiced enough the dent is out but you can see the holes the stud welder nails left becuase I pulled to hard.

Image

Here is another in the front of the cab

Image

after using the stud welder a couple of small holesfrom the nails

Image

Left wheel well before using a body hammer

Image

after using a body hammer and about 2 hours work it is almost perfect but you can still feel and see a few of the small imperfections. I tried using a wire wheel on the back so that I could see where the metal was raised and target those areas. has helped some. Does anyone know of a way otto work out the small imperfections. The body hammers if used to much seem to start pushing the dent out.

Image

The front side of the bed has come out the best so far

after

This is the one part I am not sure what to do with. I will have to get a closer pic. RIght below the passenger tailight the metal is dented and is spilt from the tailighton around the corner. I will probably have to have some one weld it since I do not know how.

Image

So far I am pretty happy with the results I can't expect myself to be perfect still a long way to go though.

Looks good twotone. Be sure to keep us posted.

Hopefully I'll be able to get one of my bump projects in my shop and start actually working on it once in awhile.......

I won't go into all the reasons and sequencing but from a logistical standpoint I need to work on the F-250 'Shop Truck' first.

Then when that is done I can start working on the half ton 'Hot Rod' project.

One question for you: How are you removing the studs after you have pulled the dents out?? I'm wondering if you are 'bending' them off and that is why you are getting the holes (the sheet metal of the body is weaker than the stud so the body tears rather than the stud coming off...). Try cutting the studs off - either with a cut-off wheel in a grinder or even with a hack saw. You will then have to grind the little bit of stud left on but you won't have the holes then...... Just a thought!!

My intention is to cut them off but they seem to be popping off while I am using the slide hammer. I don't know if I am not weldong long enough but the directions say about a second so I generally count one one thousand and let go. Then it seems like about half way through pulling the dent I end up popping the stud off with the 2 lb slide hammer I am using. I have been trying to pull easier and have been met with better results and actually left one on the truck. But I am still breaking more off than I am leaving on.

I started on the bed and they seem to pop off even easier. The directions state that if they are not welding right to be sure the metal is extra clean. Have tried that and they still seem to be popping off after a couple pulls on the slide hammer. Maybe I need to practice on a spare fender some more. :? :?

I wouldn't worry about your method of welding the studs on or at least that you aren't holding the gun long enough - since they broke off leaving a hole, that indicates the weld was stronger than the metal you welded the stud to. If anything, you might have held it too long which can cause heat stress right next to the weld causing a weak point.

Another thing you might consider is welding more studs on so that you don't pull as many times on each one. (does that make sense?) The ones that broke off could very well have been welded on properly but no matter how well its welded on, it will only take so many 'pulls'. Kinda like bending the paper clip - you can bend it back and forth a few times but it will reach a limit when it will break.

Practicing on a loose, unmounted fender will not work very well or give accurate results simply because the entire fender will move too much - got any dents on your truck??? got a hammer to make some??

Anyway, keep plugging away at it...............
