I used to go to that every year since 92. Then one year while I was in Sparks checking out the rides, we came rolling back into Reno and found the streets cleared and it was early evening. Apparently, there was some fight that got out of hand. The following year, they changed the event dates and I got screwed because I booked my room a year in advance. I figured it wasn't worth going back since because I've seen the crowds get younger and rowdier. The punks were too young to go into the casinos, too poor to have their own decent rides, too much to prove. I just wanted to check out the cool rides. I recently went back to that event like two years ago. Things were a bit better. Seemed like Reno PD did a better job at weeding out the posturing wannabe gangbangers.
Now the upside. It's one hell of a show. Lots of cool rides in downtown, Sparks and down the other end at the PepperMill Casino. I did read that the usual swap meet will no longer hold their event at the Livestock Center. They moved that to the Arco Arena in Sacramento on August 3.
Have fun if you decide to go!

Yeah, I understand about the younger, rowdier crowds. Thats why I stopped going to Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino (CA) a few years ago. Cool classic rides, great entertainment, but I started worrying about something happening to my DD in the parking lot while I was at the show.
